NBA free agency winners and losers: Rockets going big; Bucks going nowhere
After two mostly tepid days to tip off the league’s free agency period, Houston looks like a bona fide contender, while Milwaukee looks lost.

    https://wapo.st/45SHNgA

    excerpt:

    Winners: Houston Rockets

The Rockets mean business, agreeing to trade for Durant and re-signing Fred VanVleet, Jabari Smith Jr., and Steven Adams before nabbing wing stopper Dorian Finney-Smith and center Clint Capela in free agency. Now that the dust has settled, they freed themselves from Jalen Green, an inconsistent guard who underwhelmed in his playoff debut, and built out a rotation with 10-plus quality contributors.

Houston has many of the necessary ingredients to win a championship: lineup flexibility, size, proven scoring, perimeter defense, rebounding and depth. On paper, the Rockets have a case as the biggest threat to the Thunder in the West.

Perhaps the most thrilling aspect of the Rockets is that they will need Durant to be a big-time late-game performer if they want to make a deep playoff run. After several wasted seasons with the Suns, Durant will get a chance to return to the NBA’s center stage for the first time since his 2020-21 Brooklyn Nets fell just short of the East finals. Does the two-time champion, who turns 37 in September, have one more signature playoff run left in him?

    Simple math:
Getting rid of Jalen = 5 more wins next season
Durant on board = 5 more wins next season

Durant trade alone will give us more than 60 wins if they all stay healthy ;)

So my expectation is 60 wins at least next season...

Pretty cheap to blame every failure on Jalen Green and now celebrate Stone and Udoker who still doesn't know who to run a proper Offense.

Jalen simply not being on the roster gives us 5 more wins.

Well, 7 more wins is also more or less 60 wins:p

But yeah, I am worried about Ime's offense system also.

Sicily is the wheat chamber of Europe, tons to fit under the cap.

This is the ancestry of the Fertittas.

Man I hope they don't make a move for Giannis. This roster is about as well-tuned as it can get right now and is well set up to withstand guys being out for injury or maintenance. More importantly, it's in a good position to let starters rest more since the backups are pretty solid across the board.

Kind of wanted a volume efficient 3pt shooter for the bench, but another wing defender who is a pretty good 3pt shooter also works.

The Phoenix Suns depended on Durant like the Rockets depended on FVV. He can pretty much just chill here while Sengun carries the load for 3 quarters and he can close the games out. He won't be nearly as physically taxed as he was with Phoenix when he eventually broke down at the end.

Didn't say the Rockets weren't winners but to use up your gun powder on the first 1-2 days or 1 week while there are 7-8 more months to go.

Teams that were winners at the dead line went on to make the Finals.....

I guess it is good to have the Media on our side for a change after those tanking years.

I might be alone in this assessment but if:

    - Reed is comfortable from game 1 through the season, His game would really help this squad's spacing and offense.
    - Amen finds a reliable jumper (even a mid-range one)
    - Cam pulls his head out of his butt and becomes a reliable 6th man gunner that he has the potential to be. (Part if this is that Ime has to trust him)

This team still has room for internal growth on top of the the moves that they've made. Some of this relies on the coach trusting the younger guys long enough to show their improvement/growth. At any rate, I might be done making moves at this point.

Success in free agency doesnt really come as a result of a "wait and see" approach. If anything the Rockets have been waiting for years for this moment. And the Thunder made it to the Finals from free agency moves. Not deadline moves.

    Interesting.

DFS has gone from a high effort defender to a "stopper". He is a good defender, works well in a system, has length and intelligence but he isn't a stopper.

Ime has a lot of confidence in Amen Thompson to be able to create and finish this year... Reed as well to a lesser extent. Both are young but smart and playing with KD and DFS will help them a lot.

I am not sure how Sengun will fit with KD - but we will see.

I find it funny that there are so many fans that believe that Ime doesn't care about offense - they added KD and DFS because they can shoot, and in the case of KD get you 25-30 a night with efficiency. The Rockets drafted Reed Sheppard because of offense. Ime is pulling the strings while Stone smiles on television. The Rockets wanted offense - but when you cannot shoot and your playmaker is Jalen Green, well there are issues.
