Tilman completely botched the Chris Paul/ Westbrook trade. It was horrific. But, to his credit, he learned from this mistake and has gone hands off.
He had a good hire with Stone but I think the success we have right now is mostly due to him being hands off and Patrick running the show
lol this is like politics, some will be onboard some won’t opposition will continue to say he’s cheap, he’s not personally involved, we have one of the worst practice facilities supporters will point at the forward direction of the organization, that’s he’s responsible for putting the right people in the right places, for stepping up and signing of on spending when warranted btw and fwiw I love the thread, although at the end of the day it will all come down to if we make it to the WC finals and beyond
Literally Tillman's genius move to save the franchise and restore its trajectory was, after the Westbrook trade, GTF out of the way. Don't really think "owner decides to butt out because he's incompetent and terrible" is the type of thing for which we usually say things like this.
Rebuilding takes time. It'll be the same conversation next time we have to rebuild, although hopefully we've opened up at least a 5 year window.
The Westbrook trade was horrible but fortunately we're almost past it and the outgoing draft compensation didn't turn out hurting us much. Most of the other stuff like ducking the tax by not resigning Ariza, etc were things that the median owner would do. Tilman just made it seem worse with some of his comments. Seems like he learned his lesson and is now a middle of the pack owner. I'd rather have him as owner than have Les back.
I made a thread about this 5 years ago and it still hasn't changed. https://www.nba.com/rockets/front-office Still no mention of Stone or anyone else, whatsoever. It's all just Tilman and by all accounts, it seems like a lot of our recent success has been due to him stepping back and letting the basketball guys make the basketball decisions. Yes, I will give him credit for empowering his guys and spending the money but that's a lot easier now since his net worth is double what it was when he bought the team.
Let's all remember that he hasn't paid the tax yet! He can still force Stone to use assets to dump salary at the deadline. It's been done before....
After the messed up Westbrook trade they changed and undid how they treated players like assets since we had a bad rep under Morey, put full trust in the front office experts, embraced the tank, got valuable picks back, made some great draft evaluations, showed restraint on contracts, recovered from the KPJ debacle, signed savvy vets, nailed the head coach hire and have built up our assets, depth and filled our gaps turning us into a destination team that Durant wanted to come to. Masterclass by the Tillman family and Stone!
Exactly. The gambling industry's surge and takeover of sports entertainment is an abomination. But the one good thing to come out of it (homer alert) is more money for the Rockets.
Tillman has taken a step back and has allowed Patrick to take over, and honestly Patrick seems pretty good lol
The crazy thing was the Tillman hate started because we passed on bringing back Ariza who ended up being a bum the next season anyway lmao. It just felt forced for no reason. I’m no Tillman fan or defender, but sometimes CF likes to b**** just to b****, and it felt way overdone with with Tilman
