This sentence doesn't pass the smell test based on games I watched last year. So I took a look just to make sure. 2nd half of the season Reed played 294 minutes. Cam played 452 minutes. So yeah, as the season went on, Reed was getting fewer minutes last year than a guy the Rockets are openly trying to dump right now.
He's not someone you would ever want to start an offense. The Rockets only true "PGs" right now are Amen/FVV/Reed. Holiday can count as half a one but he's really a SG in PG body. Also the Rockets are trying to dump Cam, so there's a good chance he's not even on the roster come opening day.
One thing to consider here is that the Rockets are showing every indication that they're going to blow past the second apron next year and the year after, trying to contend with KD on this roster. If that's the case, they won't have access to any cap exceptions other than vet minimums, and won't be able to take back additional salary or aggregate players in trades after this summer. If they're committing to be a second-apron team in 2026 - 2027 (and the reduced cap growth makes this all the more likely), adding a tradeable mid-level salary this year makes a lot of sense. Certainly Capela has a good amount of value as an emergency reserve for what is clearly the highest injury risk outside of Durant (who's irreplaceable). At the same time, his new yearly salary is enough to cover the taxpayer MLE and bi-annual exception by himself, meaning that if the Rockets have a positional need somewhere else over 2026 and 2027 and Adams is staying healthy, they should be able to swap him without aggregation. Finally, if he is not completely washed, $7M for an age-31 backup-capable center for 3 years is an inherently positive value deal. The Rockets signed a 29-year old Daniel Theis for more years and significantly more cap-adjusted money, and they still were able to get an expiring Dennis Schroder back without having to add any draft assets to dump the contract. As long as the Fertittas are willing to spend into the luxury tax for the next three years to fund a contender, then I do like this signing as a way to pre-buy an insurance policy while they still can. If they're doing this in lieu of retaining Tari Eason, then I do think it's not a great allocation of resources.
I’m shocked as well. Every time I see Capela play he looks slow and out of shape. This just reeks of Ime.
Finally, we can start a true center and have Sengun come off the bench. What a great 2nd unit that'll be
Wow CC will have or have played with Durant, Harden, Westbrook, Unc Jeff from the 2012 Thunder team. Also Ivey was on that team too.
How many pgs do you need? 3.5 is not enough? Cam being a guard I meant as an SG. I dont think Rox are trying to dump Cam they are trying to trade him for profit. If no good deal comes up he can still stay on the team thats why talks are fluid. If they just wanna dump Cam some team will take him for a couple second rounders IMO.
I'm not seeing this - but maybe I'm missing something. How do you get there? By "this" I mean "committing to being a second apron team." Amen's extension doesn't kick in until 2027-28. Really the only issue is going to be Tari's contract, and I don't think it is going to take a genius to figure out how to duck the second apron there in 2026-27, given where our number is now and what the 2nd apron will be then.
I'm assuming Adams will continue to take games off during the regular season. Last year, there was definitely a drop off when the Rockets only had Landale to rely on for the backup center spot when Adams sat. I think Capela should really help in this regard.
