Good call. It doesn't feel like the kind of move this front office would make to agree to such a contract, just after getting Sengun on a discount, quickly and deftly dumping Jalen's contract when it became clear it was probably an overpay, and signing Adams and FVV to frugal contracts. If I were to guess I would suspect they will give him some kind of incentive-laden deal that pays him the max next year--which we can afford because Amen's extension won't have kicked in yet--and steeply drops off the year after that if he doesn't hit certain stringent milestones (65 games played, All-NBA, etc).
They could sign him to 2yrs 112M anytime. Why not wait a bit and see if his number comes down? That also bakes in a 15-20% chance of a major injury that would certainly change your outlook long term.
I rather pay KD $55M than $30M for Jalen. At least with KD, you know Amen and Jabari's game will be elevated.
Trade him to the Suns. I hear Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks are available. I'm hearing that JG is a franchise changer
Numbers don't look right. He makes $54.7mil next year. With 5% raises he should be able to get $117mil in a 2 year extension.
After Jalen Green becomes a superstar in Phoenix next season, trade KD back to them along with their picks for Jalen. Bring Jalen Home
KD's floor is $50MM/yr. No chance he signs a deal making less than Bradley Beal/ Paul George types. My guess is the only discussion will be how much more over $50MM he makes and Stone will basically have to present to him what he will do with the extra money to inventivize him to take less.
Tillman better be ready to spend for next 3 year to win a championship if he is really serious about winning. The next 2 to 3 years may be our best window until either one of our young core becomes nearly as good as KD or we get some other superstar.
What are we worried about? ((also, do some research)) A max for KD is like 122 or 124 mill over 2 years. 112 is a discount. Was the thinking that he would play for the minimum wage or something? We got him to go "all in" - and we'll probably try duck the tax THIS year so that the next 2 we can pay it (with his max). Then he comes off the books and we reassess where things are at in terms of overall salary.
Spoiler 3:33 Windhorst: A big part whether Houston “won” is what they do with KD’s contract. MacMahon: I anticipate a contract extension. Windhorst: 2 years at the full max? MacMahon: Not ready to say that. Windhorst: Before full picture, you need to hear what the extension is. MacMahon: Gonna assume 2 years at a high number. I don’t know it’ll be the full max. "...Durant is eligible for 2y/$121M. Will it be all of that? Part of that?” Spoiler $122M, $124M tomato tomahto Now if you said like 2y/$100M
I'm pretty sure the LLM that generated this incorrectly pulled from a bunch of articles written last year talking about how Jimmy Butler was eligible for a 2-year, $112M (technically $112.6M) extension from Miami. For everyone's sake, the actual numbers that KD is eligible for: If he is extended as part of the trade or within six months of the move, he can get up to: 2026: $59,539,018 (max salary, 35% of the cap). 2027: $62,515,969 (5% raise). Total: $122M If he waits until 6 months after the trade, he can get: 2026: $59,539,018 (max salary, 35% of the cap). 2027: $64,302,139 (8% raise). Total: $123.8M LeBron's "discount extension" was a whopping $700k in 2024, and he'll be $1.5M below max salary this year by opting in. Maybe KD gives the Rockets more than that, but I'd be pleasantly surprised.
Stone nailed it with FVV. If this is the KD deal, he nailed that, too. You just can’t be upset in any way right now. If you are upset, you prefer to be miserable.
Unless Durant’s extension affects the Rockets ability to pay Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason (it won’t) when the time comes, who cares? You don’t trade for Durant and give up what the Rockets did as a one-year rental.
I thought the whole deal was that whoever KD got traded to was expected to pony up a 2-yr max extension as part of the deal... i mean ow we traded for a 1-year rental... if theres no further deal in place... Folks that want to hold off and see how he does this year,,, who's to say he will re-sign down the road... I mean I understand that we'd have bird rights and could offer slightly more... but still... what if he decides he doesnt like something (like being offered less than his max) and decides he's gonna bolt at the end of the year,,,
