I agree that’s we need to prioritize a shooter, who do yall think we should target? Below is my initial list Gary Trent Jr. Tim Hardaway Jr. Malik Beasley Luke Kennard My fear is a NT MLE singing might kick Cam Whitmore out of the rotation, which would blow as that was one of the parts of the KD trade that I was excited about. I also would be weary about signing anyone to longer than a 1 year contract as we are about to get expensive. The obvious answer is Ime needs to play a 10-man rotation FVV/Reed Amen/MLE KD/Cam Jabari/Tari Sengun/Adams
Gary Trent Jr. please. He’s always been a great shooter, but he also actualky used to play good defense when he was in Toronto. Under Ime he’s got a chance to resurrect his D and have his best all around years as a player.
I think this would be a good pickup for us. We need a vet SG that will be a consistent shooter and knows his role. He should be affordable and hopefully he looks at us now as a contending team that he will have a real role on. We will see what happens next week..
If Cam can’t crack the rotation by February deadline, trade him while he still has value. He still has value as I’m reading teams that are interested in still after two season. If he still can’t crack the rotation after year 3, he’s probably not going to. im saying this if we plan on using the MLE for a sg because Amen isn’t really a sg. Especially in a halfcourt setting. as setup, teams are going to force the ball out of Durants hand. Hes the only real perimeter threat and not the best passer under duress.
Reading the tea leaves… I think the team is actively throwing out Cam Whitmore, cap fillers, future first/s for that SG and/or a first round pick from overseas they can develop. Regardless, FO can still do whatever they want as long as it doesn’t impact the core. We’ve come a long way fam.
I would like to use the mle on a shooter. Also. Gives us some salary to make an in season trade if needed. I think Ime can do a 10 man rotation pretty easily because I expect Adams and KD to be load managed. And hopefully we'll start to see a reduction of Fred's minutes also.
I completely agree if we can sign him to stay under the LT AND it’s a 1 year deal, I really want to maintain as much room as possible for potential Jabari and Tar extensions now that Washington has kind of killed our leverage with those two. I prefer Trent, but if the option was Trent for 2 years and Kennard for year at the same $$, I’d pick Kennard
The answer here is clearly start the year with a 10-man rotation. Anything less is likely Ime just being stubborn with Whitmore
Gary Trent Jr. would have been the top of that list a few seasons ago because he actually played D. However, it's dropped off considerably. THJ is way too streaky and is 33 years old. Beasley might have played himself into a decent contract this past season. Give me Kennard. He's a 44% career shooter from deep and actually has some playmaking chops. His worst shooting season from deep was still 39.4%, he's just an elite shooter. We're not looking for a potential starter here, so his defensive limitations are not that much of a concern.
Fred is at $25 now, not $24, so we'll have $8-9 of the NT-MLE if we do all vet mins, or $9-10 if we buy a 2nd rounder tonight.
You mean, if we opt out of Holiday and Jock's contract and attempt to stay under the tax? I'd rather just keep Landale and Holiday. Now, we are willing to go into the tax this year, then opt out of Landale's contract and use the full NT-MLE. I just don't like the idea of losing Holiday and Landale to land one 10m or so FA.
The repeater tax needs to be avoided, so you want to delay that clock starting if at all possible. This year it's possible to do that, so I bet they will try to stay out of the lux tax this year. Landale could be brought back at vet min, maybe holiday too, if you wanted to keep those guys. Holiday would be my priority of those 2.
We're going to waive Holiday, who makes 4.9m and shoots 38% 3s for his career, so we can sign Trent Jr., who shoots 39% 3s for his career? And pay him considerably more than Holiday? I get one plays SG and the other PG, but I just don't see Trent Jr. as a significant upgrade to the rotation. I do like Kennard's numbers as a sizeable improvement in shooting, but I'm worried he doesn't fit the team. His defense is bad and I think Ime would keep him glued to the bench as a result.
I like Aaron and would be fine having him back, but Gary Trent Jr is almost half a foot taller he’s 6’6” in shoes with a 6’9” wingspan). Holiday is actualky an undersized SG. Trent shot 41% from 3 last yr on good volume (39% the year before). Especially next to a small guard like Fred or Reed, Trent is a big upgrade on Aaron…and I like Aaron.
As long as we keep Cam on the team and he's getting 18-20 minutes a game, there's only going to be 10-12 minutes available for whoever we sign.
The only thing about FVV making $24mil instead of a lower number is that the Rockets can't use the entire MLE without going into the tax. Now, this may not be an issue if Tilman is willing to pay the tax to maximize our odds of winning next year. But I do think he will try to duck under the tax since he will be paying for a lot of it next year when Jabari and Tari get pay bumps. I think not having the full MLE take us out of the Ty Jerome range. The Rockets also need a 3rd string center due to Adams health. So I'm thinking they break this up and try to sign a center and a guard for ~$5mil each.
