Ok, this is probably a dumb question but does IE need to be installed in order to use FireFox?

There is some exploit on my pc that is using IE to launch popups. Can't get my adaware/spybot to find the spyware. It's getting annoying.

    Please answer, thanks.

IE can't be removed, so there's not much you can do about that. Have you updated Adaware and Spybot? Try CWShredder too.

I believe Firefox is completely independent from IE, yes. But if you're thinking you want to uninstall IE, I don't think you can... IE is hooked into your OS pretty good...

Right, Firefox is completely independent from IE, but you can't remove IE so you're pretty much limited to figuring out what it is that is on your system opening the popups.

Alright Vengeance, I got Firefox and it's working good. Like the tabs and when will clutch bbs get rss feeds?

I asked this in another thread a while ago but here goes again: I use msn messenger and when it alerts me for hotmail e-mails (and I click the alert/popup) it starts IE which is really annoying.

Can I have messenger start Firefox?

    Thanks

I think there are some extensions which emulate the Google Toolbar. There is also a very basic one built-in, I thought.

Glad you like Firefox. It totally rules, doesn't it?

Anyhow, I think I have found a fix. Now you can try these things:

Shop for Music Link doesn't open in your default browser.

Now try that, it may or may not work.

    If not, try:

Allegedly, MSN Messenger 6.2 fixes this.

Let me know if that doesn't fix it, because I don't know if it will or not.

Here's the Google Toolbar for Firefox

You can get an unofficial google bar here: http://googlebar.mozdev.org/

I've used it for a while, and it's pretty close to the original in look and functionality.

    Thanks for the input guys.

I can't seem to get Macromedia Flash to install and run through FireFox. It will go through the intstall etc. BUt it still will give me the green puzzle piece thing telling me that i need the plugin still.

    hmmm.....

I haven't tried CWshredder. I am going to look that one up right now.

maybe a browser or system restart will get your flash to start to work. you'll also find, as you surf, that there are a few more plug ins you'll have to install and there will be a few things that you'll sacrifice using firefox, but its a much, much, better browser. The learning curve is pretty small, but it's worth it.

This happened to me too. You have to actually go to the macromedia website and get their installer from there. Just clicking on the "get plugin" button on your firefox does nothing.

Cool, it seems to be working now (macromedia plugin)

I love FireFox. I dont use IE anymore unless I have to.

I sigend up for Verizon DSL and they have MSN Premium (something like that) included with it and the browser is much better than the regular IE.

I bounce back and forth between that and FireFox. I use FireFox roughly 95% of the time.

You used to be able to uninstall Explorer on the older Windows but they took away that option i believe now with the new OS's.

The firefox has that built in google search but not the full toobar....

Extensions for it work great though

Dang, this isn't yet compatible with the new version of firefox. I just installed it and I don't know what to do. Muddle through for a couple days without the goodbar, or reinstall the old version that I was running. Hmm.

    Try this for google toolbar

Hmm, why does it say you aren't a "Genuine MS Windows" user? I'm sure we can find a way around that . . .
