He still hits like crap in Sugarland and he still strikes like crazy so it's not a no-brainer to bring him up. However, he's pretty much hit well at every level and he's only been in the minors for 1.5 seasons. He's ahead of schedule. He needs to figure out how not to strikeout since he's near .400 BABIP which is pretty stupid.
Some thoughts. Not good, not bad. With Matthews on the team it's harder to move Altuve between 2B/LF. Jose will need more starts in LF/DH. With Matthews on this team it is even more RH heavy. Matthews makes Guillorme expendable. It's one less LH bat, but probably doesn't matter with him. When Matthews comes up Rodgers is gone ( he may be gone anyway) With Matthews on this team, ( and Melton healthy) Jake Meyers is suddenly the 6th fastest player on this team !! I remember 2021 when he was brought up, he was the fastest until they brought up Siri.
I'm not advocating for it but considering how Dana likes to bring people up early for the experience, I can see him up when the roster expands. I'm also pretty optimistic about him because his tools are pretty damn loud. He just needs to stop striking out one third of the time.
Bryce Mayer, Railin Perez, and Alonzo Tredwell (in his Asheville debut) combined to shut out Wilmington 9-0. Mayer: 3 IP, 2 H, 6 K Perez: IP, 2 H, 3 K Tredwell: 5 IP, 2 H, BB, 3 K
Twine Palmer threw a scoreless inning for Fayetteville; his last appearance was May 10 but he did not spend time on the IL.
Honestly - I trust the GM and player development people. Matthews is a very talented player - very high ceiling but flawed… when they think he is ready, he will be called up. His strikeouts and inconsistency is a valid concern. If he cuts his strikeouts down, he will likely be a star.
Trey Dombroski @ Springfield: 5 IP, 5 H, ER, 3 K Corpus got one hit, a solo homer from the recently acquired Wes Clark, in a 3-1 loss. They dropped 5 of 6 in Springfield and got no-hit on Friday.
