I love scouting via highlight reels and single ABs:

Knorr looks like another "unheard of Astros pitcher who will pitch in MLB" clone. Needs to sharpen the curve and keep it down.

Amilcar Chirinos, who I had never heard of before, looks kinda "meh". He's got a straight FB, a bit of a change, and not much else

Drew Brutcher sure as hell "looks" like a hitter. Dude is not small. Nice stance and swing.

    Hector Salas has "pissant" potential.

I now know what these 4 guys look like, is my main takeaway

But none more than that? No restrictions?

Shouldn't you have to place a drafted guy at a higher level?

    Something?

Kemmer was a great story, I was rooting for him to get a taste of MLB for a few days at least. Alas...

It has been a long while since I looked into this ...

I think every team can protect N minor leaguers from being drafted by another minor league team in the minor league Rule 5 draft

If the Astros could only protect their Top 30 prospects (implies N == 30), that covers more likely than not all of the players who have a shot at The MLB. Non-Top 30 players are JAGs that all minor league teams need to fill their rosters. Anyway in function the Minor League Rule 5 draft usually does not involve real prospects.

Yes, basically each org can protect one roster’s worth of eligible players (by assigning them to AAA). From the list I posted above, Houston could protect ~30 of those guys. So the only guys left eligible for the minor league phase are guys a team doesn’t really want. It’s effectively a minor league waiver process, and the vast majority of prospects who pass thru a minor league rule 5 end up being released within a year (whether picked or not).

Its truly just a way for teams with shallow/crummy farms to get first dibs on guys before they’re released.

2024 4th rd pick Parker Smith went 4.1 ip 0er 4k today for Fayetteville. He’s thru his 1st 3 A ball appearances without allowing an earned run. Hes a bit of a forgotten man but is probably a pretty good prospect.

Anderson Brito with another solid start for Asheville: 5 IP, 2 H, ER, BB, 6 K

5.1 BB/9... not ideal, however. Also a bit of a concern is the fact that he's pitched 5+ innings just four times this season.

Brito probably has one more start to make this month, and then he should hopefully head to Corpus for the second half of the season.

Raimy Rodriguez threw four scoreless innings for Fayetteville and allowed a hit, walked three, hit a batter, and struck out four.

Rodriguez has strung three decent four-inning stints together this month; in these 12 innings, he's allowed one run (on a solo homer) on six hits, walked six, and struck out eight.

Luis Baez went 3-5 with a double and an RBI single for Corpus.

Down in the complex leagues... only the FCL team won today. Roiner Quintana had two doubles, one of which drove in two. Sandro Pereira made his season debut and he went 1-2 with a walk and got credit for an RBI when he grounded into a force out. No I don't know what his injury was. Pereira is a kid who's intrigued me a bit because all he did in the DSL was hit.

Both DSL teams lost. Luis De Leon hit his second homer of the year and Amauri Ramirez went 2-3 with an RBI double for the Blue team. Diego Campos and Edwilmin Matos (a kid who was definitely named with @Buck Turgidson in mind) drove in two apiece for the Orange team.

So when do we bring Brice Matthews up. He still strikes out a lot but his OPS is up to .880 right now.
