In 2010, Kleiner Perkins was the first PE firm to purchase controlling interest to an NBA team, the GW Warriors; since then, the team has won 4 NBA rings.

more PE firms have follow suit to purchase NBA teams., https://www.sportico.com/feature/nba-private-equity-ownership-rules-1234784156/

Over the past 2 years, PE firms have purchased the 2 most historic NBA franchises

    • in 2024, after winning their 18th ring, the Boston Celtics team was sold to the Symphony Technology Group, with a valuation of > $6 billions
    • yesterday, the Guggenheim Partners Group purchased controlling interest to the LA Lakers, who has won 17 rings, with a valuation of $10 billions, making it the most valuable sports franchise in the world

imo, overwhelming majority of NBA teams will be owned by PE firms

According to your own article (and everything else I've read) PE firms can own up to 20% of a NBA franchise and cannot have controlling interest.

Also, Guggenheim is not buying the Lakers, Mark Walter and a group of investors are. Same setup they have with the Dodgers (MLB and the NFL also do not allow PE funds to control teams, only buy minority stakes).

I think the fan ownership model that they do with some football clubs (Real Madrid) in europe seems pretty cool
