Wow. Extremely risky move by the Giants.

I guess depending on how you view Devers’ selfishness in Boston, his contract is not that onerous. It’s basically $30M AAV over his age 28-36 seasons. If he’s a Yordan-level DH he’ll be a bargain, and as long as he’s an 850 ops guy thru his age ~33 season he will likely have been worth his contract. Tibbs is a first round pick and Bello is a low-bonus complex league pitching prospect. Harrison is also a valuable piece. Hicks’ contract is probably a few million underwater.

    Redsox pulled a Mavericks.

Got rid of Mookie Betts AND Rafael Devers.

Not only that, they couldn't even keep Xander (although he's not as good as Betts or Devers)

PC way of performing said salary dump….. also teams that really want to get rid of players end up paying their salary to make them go away.

The Red Sox, at least, have four World Series championships over the last 20 years.

Exactly as they have some splaining to do since they just swept the Yankees and are finally playing good ball. At least they got the Giants to take on his whole contract. Yet John Henry is such a ****ing miser - the Red Sox bring in so much revenue and he is such a ****ing cheapass. I really wished someone else owned the team.

They’re over-leveraged. Did you see what they just paid to the Liverpool player? They’re going to spend on things that bring them returns… and the Red Sox, along with the extreme variance in MLB, is no longer a priority.

None of this is surprising annymore after they traded Betts (also for very little).

And the Astros weren’t ever going to pick up his entire salary/10 year contract.

That was in response to Civale trade, but yeah, the Red Sox similarly just wanted to be rid of Devers. I wouldn't have wanted Devers even if Crane would take on the contract

The Red Sox made out like a bandit on that trade !!

I realize that Devers is one of the top 10 run producers in MLB, but he is owed $250M over the next 7 years so there is not a lot of excess value there.

And they have enough bats that his replacement will be a legitimate MLB hitter, not Cooper Hummel

They needed pitching and got a couple of arms to try, and saved a ton of money to bring in an Ace to pair with Crochet in the offseason.

Red Sox got so lucky here. There might be only 2 teams who would't trade DH contract like in a heartbeat if possible. Phillies, Padres (if owner still alive) and Giants. They are like year away Devers reaching NTC rights and at that point in trade they prob would only be grasping to someone take the contract and sell that team as idea to Devers.

When I say lucky I mean all the drama turning fans a bit on Devers, prospects called up to show we go with these and also seeing what real leadership is on the field and in clubhouse with Bregman. I think they gonna put that freed money to work Bregman extension, trade or starting horse to complement Crochet. Also Red Sox had million lefty bats and too much pos.players and need of atleast depth pitching.

When Xavier left, Devers was never the same. He was managing and massaging Devers all the way to stardom keeping him levelheaded and composed. Red Sox burns lot of money to finally compete and Devers arrives to spring training overweight and pissed. Red Sox also got lucky that he started hitting because otherwise selling the contract 100% to Giants and also getting pitching would have been a pipedream. Stars really aligned here for Boston. Giants not doing this great 2025 and prob.they won't be adding right now in a hurry. :)
