I see someone beat me to this.

This looks like a very good fit.

Milwaukee usually runs a tight payroll and targets young, high ceiling pitching that it can develop and use during controllable years.

It would likely put the Astros over the CBT, which actions show is a big big priority to avoid, but only by a marginal amount.

Brewers are also in the playoffs hunt, so would not be simply looking to sell.

Shortstop is a short term need, as Joey Ortiz is in the midst of a poor sophomore season. Maybe they would like Dubon?

They have Jake Bauers who is having a good season on their bench as a lefty hitting corner of/1b.

Civale and Bauers for Dubon, Aaron Brown, and Alex Santos.

By my math, it would add about $2.5M

Biggest issue, IMO, is it makes Whitcomb the backup SS. Maybe opens a spot for Matthews? Maybe bring up Guillorme or Short?

But adds proven MOR-BOR starter and a lefty bench bat that can sub Walker and play LF.

If the Brewers would do that trade I would love it for Houston. On the one hand, Dubin has a lot of value to Houston and is a clubhouse favorite, but on the other there’s just not much drop off from him to someone like Short or Guillorme. I don’t think the trade is realistic because I don’t think Houston will make Dubon available and I don’t think Milwaukee would be interested in him, but it’s probably a fair value trade. I think Aaron Brown is a release candidate so I think you’d have to upgrade that piece to make it work.

Whitcomb has played 2x as much SS in the minors as any other position. If the Astros aren't going to play him (which seems clear), perhaps Milwaukee would take that chance. He's got good minor league #s and might have more value to another team than he does here.

I didn't look at Brown, I totally missed on that. I was just trying to think of high minors SP who had some hype a couple of years ago. My bad.

I think it would need to be someone who can be rotation insurance for them in 2025 but has upside and can possibly pitch in the bullpen to replace Civale.

    Maybe that's Blubaugh?

As for Dubon, I agree he is a useful player and clubhouse darling. But he is expensive for a bench player, and I think they must find a way to stay under the CBT. No matter what they say, actions clearly show that is #1 priority. Maybe even a hard requirement behind the scenes.

Rather than dump Dubon they can always just include prospect value to have the other team eat money on whatever players the Astros are adding. Or they could forego adding a guy like Bauer.

Here is my hypothetical Civale trade:

    Astros get:
    SP Aaron Civale
    IF Juan Baez
    $4M

    Brewers get:
    P Colton Gordon
    IF/OF Shay Whitcomb
    RP Kaleb Ort

It's also not realistic because of the tax

Crane has shown that he is willing to go into the tax, but only for certain players. As much as those two guys would fit in with what we need, neither are the type of player that would make Crane agree to go into the tax

Who is this "Juan Baez" you're talking about? All I can see is a 20-yo mediocre (I do like the BB:K) A-ball MI?

And why in the hell would you trade Ort in this deal?

Yea cause at this point i'm not completely sure Civale is much better than Gordon

He was good two years ago but outside of that he has been very Meh...and he has pitched for three of the better organizations in baseball when it comes to pitching, so while it's always possible with our guys, it's less likely that there is something major there to unlock on him

Not saying I wouldn't take him with all of our injuries, but only if the return was a couple of low level guys

I know Milwaukee likes to make moves for young mlb arms with upside, but they ain't talking about trading Hader or Williams here

What do you send out to AZ for:

    Merrill Kelly

If they decide to be sellers, he might be the best SP moved. Other teams will offer better packages.

Edit: Forgot about Sale. Good chance he is moved. Regardless, we aren’t acquiring a SP of the caliber of Kelly.

I don't see Milwaukee paying to trade Civale.

They don't want to trade him as it is. They want to keep him for rotation insurance.

They won't trade him and also pay a team to take him, regardless of what prospects the Astros are willing to include. This could possibly be wrong if the Astros had any prospects valuable enough to force their hand, but they don't

Because his demand will be crazy high and we don’t exactly have the most to offer. Literally just said that in the previous comment.

Yet we've traded for Verlander, Cole and Greinke with the same level of "not the most to offer"

    Never say never.

We had more to offer when we made all three of those trades. Hell, all four of the trades if you want to count the second one for JV.

The first trade for JV we sent what was MLB Pipeline’s #46 overall prospect along with two other decent ones. Greinke we sent 3 of our top 5 prospects…our farm was better at that point. The Pirates received Musgrove along with some prospects.

As of now Ullola's value is purely speculative, as are these trades.

I can not see Houston going in to next season with Dubon on the payroll anyway.

    ok, you're right, we're ****ed

Maybe we can trade a can of sticky spray and 2 used (slightly) cups for whatever reliever the Rockies don't need

I know you oddly don’t like him. I’m in love though.
