No, I think the mayor should have allowed the local police and sheriff to maintain order, and when that didn't happen the governor should have called in the National Guard. That has nothing to do with what I posted though. The thread topic is that the troops in the video were "checked for allegiance". The quote seems to indicate that all the troops were given the option of not attending if they didn't want to appear in the photos/video. Do you think it is bad to allow people who don't want to be in a photo op to choose not to be involved?

In this case, I think the city and state have been derelict (both in terms of the response to the riots and in terms of immigration enforcement and cooperation with federal immigration enforcement). We (meaning California) have passed laws that make it illegal to contact ICE or CBP when we arrest criminals who are illegal aliens. We have passed laws requiring prosecutors to consider the immigration consequences of charges we bring against non-citizens and to factor those consequences into plea bargaining, so a non-citizen is entitled to a better deal than a citizen having committed the same crime. Clearly Mayor Bass and Governor Newsom were fine with allowing ICE/CBP to be blocked and in some cases attacked, so ultimately, I think the feds have to either decide that they are not going to enforce the law or they have to do what is necessary to protect their people who are enforcing the law.

Five Waymo cars got burned, but the media has shown it a thousand times, so 5,000 cars were burned.

The Mayor instituted a curfew for a square mile of the city, which is 500 square miles.

So yeah, it's pretty bonkers out there.

The human brain has limits. Attention span limits. Our working memory is severely restricted. We can barely remember more than 7 digits after 1 second. Add to this the fact that we have within ourselves a "dinosaur" reactive center that isn't so different from animals. This ancient center is integrated into our higher-processing center, but it can easily be overtaken by our more reactive, primitive impulses.

Unfortunately, it's inherent to our limited brains that humans are easy propaganda targets. We are much easier to manipulate than most people are willing to admit.

This has been done before. Mass populations have been manipulated to hate vulnerable populations because of grievances that leaders like Hitler, who was himself full of grievance, were able to fully tap into.

TLDR: You want a good society? Have good people at the top. You want a bad society? Have bad people leading you.

Clearly, the military should be non-partisan. The danger of partisanship in the military is easy to understand, and people cheering that on are being extremely short-sighted.
