To grow the manufacturing sector we must first shrink it. The U.S. added 139,000 jobs in May, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced on Friday, beating economists expectations but marking a slowdown from previous months as President Donald Trump's idiotic tariff policy takes a toll on the economy. While the topline jobs number appeared to be fine, economists said a deeper look at the numbers paint a more concerning picture, as the past two month’s jobs numbers were revised downward, the labor force participation saw a steep decline, and certain industries actually lost jobs in May. "Below the surface, there's a lot more to worry about," University of Michigan economics professor Justin Wolfers wrote in a post on X. "April was revised down -30k, and March was revised down -95k. As a result, payrolls grew at only an average rate of +135k over the past three months, a notable slowing." What’s more, almost all of the job growth was from the health care and hospitality industries, according to the BLS data. Meanwhile, industries like manufacturing—which Trump was seeking to boost with his tariffs—actually lost jobs in May. The manufacturing industry shed 8,000 jobs, with machinery manufacturing losing the lion's share of that number with 7,300 jobs shed.
"Hi, I am a grifter, you may remember me from 9/11 and then later I stole my bosses company. Anyways, I figured out that the Democrats would not let me into their inner circle, but Trump would - so here I am. You can ask me any questions you want but I intend to just confuse anyone listening and generally be evasive in my responses because I figure MAGA will only hear what they want to hear. So fire away - I have a group of slogans already cued up to use." - Lutnick
https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/only-made-america-smartphone-maker-165540350.html The only ‘Made in America’ smartphone maker has a message for Apple about manufacturing in the Trump tariff era Looks like their base model a $799 phone is made in China while the US model is 1999. I phone would cost $3000 if made in the US. They are not coming back to the US.
I applaud the company for trying, but I think the price and spec of the $2000 phone makes it clear that it's just not realistic unless people are willing to make huge sacrifices. Even the $2000 is not really all made in USA. The mainboard and assembly is in the US, but major components are not. The CPU is made in Korea, GPU in China, modem in China, and Wifi chip in India. The CPU performs at about 5% to 10% of the speed of a modern flagship. I do think not having semi-conductor manufacturing and design in the US is a huge security risk that needs to be remedied. Pushing for more legislation like the CHIPS Act is the way.
But this was already happening before Trump came into office? TSMC started building out their newest fab factory after the chips act? We had 20+ new fab plants being announced after the chips act
Yes. I think Biden getting CHIPS ACT passed (and actually getting companies to move) is one of the defining achievements of his presidency. I never thought TSMC would agree to have their flagship or near flagship process anywhere aside from Taiwan.
We didnt even manufacture solar panels and/or batteries before Biden came into office. The IRA has onshored the entire solar panel supply chain back to states including the silicon wafers and over 300+ new battery plants. Unfortunately Republicans are rolling back the IRA subsidies which has led to battery companies halting investments and stopping ongoing construction This entire tariff nonsense is just r****ded. We were already doing what Trumps pretends to accomplish with these dumbass tariffs.
The Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada (where they build batteries) received funding to start building in 2014 and started construction later that year (per tesla.com). The first battery they produced there was in January 2016. So, this is true, but only if you meant when Biden came into office as Vice President. I don't think that is what you meant, since you mentioned the IRA.
... you know theres different types of batteries right. I'm not talking about lithium ion batteries... I'm talking about long duration batteries and other commercial batteries which we have only started manufacturing as of late... batteries are the ONLY reason ECOT has said Texas wont have blackouts this summer.... in California batteries have saved the energy grid....batteries are the solution.... Its funny you mention tesla bcz as a libertarian you would be against the loan they took from the LPO office under Obama. If it wasn't for that loan tesla would've been bankrupt and out of business.... Its almost as if the government is needed to foster new technologies....
You know that Tesla builds long duration batteries, right? Yes, I am against subsidies. That doesn't actually change reality. Batteries have been under production in the United States for over a decade. Except it isn't, because there have been inventions for thousands of years without government intervention.
