But by the time 2022 came, when then-general manager Monte McNair and assistant general manager Wes Wilcox were looking for ways to turn their middling team into a playoff contender, De’Aaron Fox’s market value had plummeted to the point where Tyrese Haliburton became the focal point of their rebuilding efforts. League sources say the Kings explored trades involving Fox, who had recently signed a five-year, $160 million deal, but simply didn’t find a suitable return.

That’s why you don’t make a bad trade just to shake things up (cough) Westbrook.

Yes, they've made several short sighted moves.

The impatience bit them in years to come, we'll see how things go but typically once your on the treadmill you need to have your team make an against the odds breakthrough, or fortunately get a free agent star like Toronto with Kawhi. Or just blow it up completely and rebuild the right way.

Or stay delusional and walk the treadmill like Chicago has recently.

Vlade traded Cousins to New Orleans in Feb 2017 maybe to reset the team culture.

Then Vlade signed Zach Randolph in Summer 2017 when they had a young team.

This seems like PR spin from the Kings. They've made awful franchise decisions it's not just this trade

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the decision to trade Haliburton was not one that Monte McNair wanted to make. The owner wanted the deal to be made. The GM has very little say in Sacramento and in many cases McNair learned what was going to happen when he arrived at the arena.

Last time I spoke to him, he said he is still deciding what he wants to do. He has several possible options.

That matches what I remember about the trade.

Ranadive was impatient and wanted McNair to do something ASAP rather than sort out the overlap between Haliburton and Fox during the offseason.

So he was traded to the Pacers in Feb 2022.

    ...................Kings W/L Record
    2021 - 22...........30 -52............
    2022 - 23...........48 - 34...........
    2023 - 24...........46 - 36...........
    2024 - 25...........40 - 42...........,

Haliburton is 25 and Sabonis is 29.

Reasonable expectations would be that Sabonis has limited upside left while it is possible that Haliburton will improve.

By sending out Haiburton for Sabonis. the Kings capped their upside.
