Agreed about the Lakers. It's very obvious in this playoffs that they desperately need a competent center. If they get Adams, they can be a dangerous team. We need to do everything we can to prevent that from happening.
FVV being the lynchpin. Without that renegotiation happening before June 29th, nothing else can occur. All other signings happen after that date. And if they don’t pick up the options on Landale and Holiday, that means the team has to replace them with minimum salary players (which I personally don’t think is prudent). If they don’t agree to a FVV deal and they are forced to pick up his option, we are a luxury tax team. And a deal in the $25M+ range means that they don’t have tge ability to extend Jabari and Tari this summer.
I say $20M because if you offer the market rate of $15M over 3 years, that’s $45M total. He can just decline the offer and force the team to pay him that next year.
The NTMLE is $14M, it’s the maximum Adams could get. It’s possible Adams gets that, but I think less than likely - there are not many NTMLE’s, a lot of good candidates, and it is actually quite hard for a salary constrained + competitive team to actually use the NTMLE and justify paying that to a backup C for whom you need another backup to the backup. I agree with you, in principle. Just providing a conservative case for luxury tax planning purposes. Also - I think for status/leadership/vibes reasons they probably aren’t going to pay FVV lower AAV than Dillon or Tari/Jabari extensions. Probably a little bit more than those guys (but also no guaranteed money past two years). Landale and Holiday are 11th and 12th men. 11th and 12th men are minimum or near-minimum salary slots for almost every competitive NBA team. FVV’s new contract is almost certainly already done. There is not a universe where FVV is on his team option and playing for the Rockets next year. And re-signing FVV even at $25M for 2 years has no meaningful bearing on extending Tari and Jabari.
I simply don't see the point of Cam Johnson unless we are done with Tari or Jabari. He isn't a Dillion replacement to me.
Cam is injury prone and only getting older, which usually doesn't help a person to stay healthy. I'd take him, but I have no idea what I'd be willing to give up under those circumstances. He does you no damn good whatsoever if he's hurt, and he's hurt a lot of the time. There's no way I'd give up a rotation piece and a lottery pick. I don't see how the contracts would match up to where it would make sense. It would probably have to be Brooks and number 10 for Cam and number 19. I don't think that's a good trade for Houston.
What if BRK is including other draft capital (like future Knicks' picks) in the deal? What if it was #10 + Brooks to BRK for #19 + #27 (our original pick) + Cam Johnson + 2031 NYK FRP? Would that change your mind? Also the contracts line up pretty good, but BRK has a TPE that Brooks contract can fit into anyway. (Brooks contract is shrinking, but Cam's is pretty much the same for the next 2 years)
It probably would, yeah. The additional draft capital would be nice. I'm not sure that Brooklyn would be willing do that, but I do think it would take more than what has been reported to make something happen.
I'd worry some on the injuries and the defense. The shooting would be a nice add as I expect some regression in Brooks.
Pass. He's not good enough to expend our assets on. BRK getting desperate looking for a taker. He can shoot, but defense and health cancel that benefit. We can afford to be picking and should.
Non-guaranteed money doesn't count for salary matching purposes. They'd have to guarantee the 2026 salary .... but not the 26/27.
Too much speculation about which player we might be giving them. We aren't giving them anyone who plays. The idea is for them to trade UP from 19 to 10 by offering us an extra asset in Johnson. We don't need to give anything back (except salary dump). Matching dead salary is like Jock and Holiday and ?? OR Make it a 3-way and send Johnson on as a match/ partial match on a player we might actually want
Yep, exactly where I'm at. I don't think you can have Tari, Jabari, Dillon, and Cam Johnson all on the same team. At least one of them has to go if you trade for him. I can see the argument for trading Tari and adding Johnson--it would definitely improve our shooting, and Tari's defensive/rebounding skills, while impressive, are relatively redundant on this roster. But then the question becomes, who do you trade Tari for. Maybe you can use him as a part of a deal to upgrade the backcourt, but then you start talking about the front office moving on from either Jalen or Fred, which they haven't so far sounded like they want to do.
Agree with this line of thinking. Think the playbook remains similar to last year. They want to trade away a key piece, but want to do it in a way that doesn’t limit their freedom of operations. Last year they got back their 25,26 picks this way. This year the 27 swap is the new 26 pick. Trading it back to the Nets makes the most sense because it values the most to them. Cam Johnson is not the big fish here, it’s their cache of the Knicks picks. If I’m Stone I’d do 10th pick this year + the 2027 Nets Swap + Brooks for the 19th pick this year and two Knicks picks and Cam Johnson Alternatively I would float a deal without any players involved. I also laugh at the so called “bad contract” narrative. It’s merely Marks trick of creating leverage out of nothing.
Similar to what I was thinking, but rather than the 27th pick (we need future picks), I’d aim for another Knicks pick (also because the 27 swap with them carries more value to the Nets than any other teams) The player swaps are not the real target of the deal, it’s the future assets
There is zero reason to include Brooks in that deal. You're getting screwed. Flip Johnson for assets. Or take up FVVs option and send that (BKN can absorb the difference). The Nets own 2027 pick they can buy back from is for 2 Knicks picks alone. High price, but they have no leverage. In short, they are trying to but 2 premium assets from us, which we have no reason to give up. 19 and Cam = pick 10. 2 Knicks = their own 2027 back. But Cam Johnson isn't necessarily the prize for us. Who else wants him? Where can he be used as a match? If we can take up FVVs option and send out 40mill, then what can we take back? Eg, who wants to shed 20mill in salary [send out 40 and bring back 20] while picking up a rotation worthy wing? [Lots of teams!!]
I wouldn’t mind him. Good 3pt jumper off screens and catch and shoot. Ok defensively. Injury history is the big question mark.
