Is it any wonder liberals are having a mental health crisis? https://nypost.com/2025/06/03/us-news/is-it-any-wonder-liberals-are-having-a-mental-health-crisis/ excerpt: There’s a term in psychology called the “locus of control,” which refers to your sense of whether things happen to you or whether you make things happen. No surprise that the latter — a greater sense of agency — is associated with vastly better mental health. When you stop thinking everything is working against you and start taking power over what you can control, the world becomes a far less scary place. Unfortunately, the left has taught its voters to externalize their locus of control, according to Greg Lukianoff, co-author of “The Coddling of the American Mind.” “Progressivism, with its emphasis on victimhood and vulnerability to impersonal forces … weakens the sense of agency and, frankly, contributes to depression and anxiety,” he told The Post. “As the political left reevaluates its strategies on everything from abundance to identity, it should also consider adopting an ideology that empowers individuals, fosters an internal sense of control and doesn’t fuel emotional suffering.” more at the link
you're referring to the TACO movement spearheaded by the 78-yo obese Orange Hair, and a trust fund baby to boot
Liberals are of the left, but not all of the left are liberals. I think that's an important distinction. In my experience conservatives generally lack empathy for anyone not in their immediate orbit. Every man for himself. Not all conservatives are narcopaths, but all narcopaths are conservative.
Both sides refuse to respect the other side. Just look in this forum and take note of those who are the most insulting
You are either part of society or you are not. paying taxes for services for everyone is part of being in that society. Your takes are extremely selfish. DD
Well . . .let's go back Simple Question: DEFINE CONSERVATIVE: DEFINE LIBERAL: Spoiler I saw this one: Liberals care about harm and fairness (individualizing values), whereas conservatives care more about loyalty, authority, and sanctity (binding values). I'm not sure about this one. Rocket River
There's good and bad on both sides. This sub forum is hilarious trying to vilify conservatives and prop up liberals. The liberals on this board are about as judgemental as I've seen.
Well, you are what you are, no shame in calling out the truth. Conservatives are by and large selfish, they ignore that being in a safe society, which they benefit from is key to their way of life, they only want to pay for themselves, but that is not how successful societies work, a rising tide lifts all boats. Society is only as strong as it's weakest link and to strengthen that, taxes are needed and services are paid for from those taxes. Social programs paid for by taxes: Military Police Fire Department Schools Government National parks - which actually turn a profit Postal Just to name a few. People who don't want to contribute should go buy their own island - as long as they are here, they are required to contribute to society as a whole. At some point the lower educated people are going to realize that voting blue will help them and the country more - be a glorious day when people don't vote for policies which hurt themselves. DD
Honestly at the moment I can't. Both sides are so far gone I wouldn't know where to start It's a shame but that that's my perspective. I'd be willing to bet there are a lot of people just picking sides because of the extreme divide in the country. Probably has little to do with actual conservative or liberal values
I don't disagree with a lot of what you said. I just feel both sides are extremely selfish and you can't put the blame on one. Let's not pretend that Liberals aren't out for themselves too right now. I'm disgusted with Trump. I can't stand him. Harris wouldn't have been any better either. Neither was qualified to be president but our country is so messed up that those were our two candidates. Sad
I keeping on seeing this complaint about liberals being judgemental. Maybe you are right in some or a lot of cases. However I would just say that out of respect for myself and my manhood, if I thought I was being judged I might first ask myself… … am I being judged or am I maybe just being a little b$tch who can’t handle criticism?? If it was me… again as someone who prides himself of being a man and not a little b$tch, I would want to have that inner voice of reason to be able to distinguish criticism from just improper judgement.
What BS. This line in particular irks me: When you stop thinking everything is working against you and start taking power over what you can control, the world becomes a far less scary place. (OK Dad, thanks for the lecture of words that sound profound but mean nothing.) First, there are kooks on the left because humans, but nowhere near the number of conspiracy-addled victimhood-declaring weirdos on the right. Plus, on the left there's not a lot of kooks in major elected offices. Example 1 of 133,489: fluoride. Second, taking power over what you can control is a ripoff of Niebuhr's prayer but as usual in our discourse, it's wildly politicized in a way our man Reinhold never intended. This guy is telling people to just go about your daily business, especially your work, and forget about the powerful people sucking money out of your wallet, degrading your health care, making you less safe in times of pandemics and disasters, etc. It's atomization as a political strategy. It's easy to ignore one person, not so much millions. And really, quoting a guy who has made his living over the last 20 years by claiming college campuses are a hotbed of hippie/liberal intolerance seems a bit dated given the attacks on universities by this administration, don't you think? What's more dangerous to free inquiry: a kid on the Quad upset about discrimination or an administration dismantling the nation's higher education and research capacity? (Before you respond with "but he's a liberal," ask yourself how many liberals are funded by the Kochs and the Bradley Foundation? Those guys are not agnostic givers and don't shower money on "free speech absolutists" unless they create propaganda about the left and ignore the real systemic challenges to free speech from the right.)
I think that is the point We cannot even agree on what the terms mean . . .. so how can we start to figure out which is correct or what is even the points of contention? I think the terms is only useful as wedges There are 1. What they mean - definition wise 2. What they mean socially 3. What they mean politically Rocket River
Can't remember the exact wording of this statement but, IMO, it rings true... Liberals want to feed everyone in fear that one person might starve. Conservatives want to take food away from everyone in fear that one person doesn't deserve it. Maybe a bit simplistic but not completely inaccurate.
Well said. It's certainly an issue and one that I don't see getting solved anytime soon. We all lose unfortunately
Cry more. You obviously can't handle criticism or you wouldn't have responded with this worthless diatribe. You're not funny nor creative
What a bunch of BS, Harris would have been much better, she was a District Attorney and VP - you may not have liked her for ...reasons....but she would have been way better than Trump. Hell, you or I would be better than Trump. DD
