Tesla Sales Are Down 43 Percent In Europe As Elon Musk Scares Off Customers
BY ANDY KALMOWITZMARCH 25, 2025 10:14 AM EST

Good morning! It's Tuesday, March 25, 2025, and this is The Morning Shift, your daily roundup of the top automotive headlines from around the world, in one place. This is where you'll find the most important stories that are shaping the way Americans drive and get around.

In this morning's edition, we're checking out Tesla's dismal vehicle sales in Europe as well as how much Hyundai is willing to spend to get around U.S. tariffs. We're also going to check out what Tesla's chairperson didn't say when she was asked about CEO Elon Musk's focus on the automaker and Volkswagen's new partnership for driver assistance systems.

It's another busy day in the world of cars. Let's all lock in.

1st Gear: Tesla European sales are a disaster

Tesla's market share in Europe continued to shrink in February, as sales from the Austin, Texas-based automaker for a second month. That news comes despite the fact that overall EV registrations were up 26.1 percent throughout the continent. The company, led by outspoken CEO Elon Musk, has seen sales drop 42.6 percent in Europe so far this year. I'm not an expert, but that isn't what you want to see.

Tesla took home 1.8% of the total new car market in Europe in February and 10.3% of the EV market. Both of those are pretty solid numbers, but it's a disaster when you compare it to the same time a year ago. Back then, Tesla had 2.8% of the total market and 21.6% of the EV market.

There are two main reasons for this fairly disastrous downturn: a mediocre lineup and a strong distaste for what Musk stands for these days. From Reuters:

Tesla currently faces a number of challenges in Europe, ahead of the launch of its new Model Y mid-size SUV this month. The EV maker has a smaller, aging lineup while traditional automaker rivals and new Chinese entrants alike continue to launch new, often cheaper electric models.

Musk, the company's CEO, has also stirred controversy by courting far-right parties in Europe, which has added to Tesla's sales slump.

Overall, new car sales dropped 3.4% in Europe in February, but BEV sales were up 23.7%, and hybrid sales rose 19%. BEVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids accounted for 58.4% of the EU's car sales in February — a 10.2% increase over the same time last year.

I'm thinking Euro consumer backlash will spread to other American brands with JD being a loudmouth b**** even in private.

Imagine holding onto Twitter shares after going private. And then find yourself owning founder shares of xAI.

Cmon...have some balls for once. Call Mark Kelly a traitor.

Also, Elon didn't fly s***. He won't even get on his own craft. I mean...I wouldn't either since it's pretty freakin likely it will explode over the Caribbean. But, good on SpaceX and their engineers for getting the astronauts back in the timeframe that the Biden administration said from the beginning.

'Blatant felony': Internet celebrates as Wisconsin AG reveals 'legal action' against Musk

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk could be in for a confrontation with law enforcement if he follows through on a planned visit to Wisconsin on Sunday.

On Friday, Madison, Wisconsin ABC affiliate WKOW reported that Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul was announcing "legal action" against the South African centibillionaire after he offered a $2 million cash prize to Badger State voters on his X account. Kaul didn't elaborate on what specific "legal action" he intended to take, but only that it involved asking the state's courts to intervene to stop Musk from paying voters in Wisconsin's April 1 Supreme Court election between GOP-backed Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Brad Schimel and Democratic-backed Dane County Judge Susan Crawford. Musk said in a now-deleted tweet that he would be handing out two checks for $1 million apiece to registered voters at an upcoming event in Wisconsin, but has since stated that the $1 million prizes would instead be for those who signed a petition against "activist judges."

"The Wisconsin Department of Justice is committed to ensuring that elections in Wisconsin are safe, secure, free, and fair. We are aware of the offer recently posted by Elon Musk to award a million dollars to two people at an event in Wisconsin this weekend," Kaul stated. "Based on our understanding of applicable Wisconsin law, we intend to take legal action today to seek a court order to stop this from happening."

University of California-Los Angeles law professor Rick Hasen wrote on his election law blog that in Wisconsin, it is a felony under state's "election bribery" statute 12.11(1m)(a)(2) to offer money in exchange for anything involving the voting process — whether for or against a candidate, or to show up at the polls, or to not cast a ballot at all.

On Bluesky, University of South Carolina political science professor acknowledged that it was "big" for Kaul to announce that he was taking action against the world's wealthiest man. He noted that "Trump cannot pardon his buddy Musk over a state felony." Others remarked that there are much stiffer penalties on the books elsewhere for lesser offenses. Doug Lindner, who is the senior director of judiciary and democracy at the League of Conversation Voters, reminded his followers that "Georgia Republicans made it a crime to give voters water while they stand in 11-hour lines."

"I know teachers/professors who’ve been punished for offering extra credit to vote in an election if eligible," Xavier University associate professor Andrew Zolides wrote on Bluesky.

"Elon Musk has committed a blatant felony by offering money for votes in order to help Brad Schimel," wrote Wisconsin Democratic Party chairman Ben Wikler. "This is a chainsaw attack on democracy and the rule of law. Musk should be brought to justice immediately."

NYT describes a struggling, drug-addled Elon Musk

The New York Times paints the picture of Elon Musk that Musk himself has shown the world: abusing drugs, questionable parenting, and abhorrent ethics.

We've seen enough videos of a freaking out, twitching, oddly talking Elon "Pedo Guy" Musk. Social media is replete with them. Stories about his awful parenting come from his children and their mothers struggling to get him to behave responsibly or to abide by their agreements. This stuff is so widely understood that even the New York Times can now expose it.

X is a private company and Musk is a liar. He folded X into his AI company get out from under a mountain of debt he wasn't able to repay. He just shifted the debt to another set of investors he can promise the moon to.

At least try to be objective.

Musk stated X would become the everything app. Its objectively fair to state X is nowhere near his vision from 2 years ago.

The valuation is now roughly the same as when he bought it, that is as much as you can trust any valuation. He opted not to roll his debt into xAI and take a loss. I have not read any reports on what the investors in X decided. But given the amount of AI compute power xAI currently has and in process of building, and the enthusiasm from some of his X investors, specifically the ones in the middle making deals with Trump, I would say they are quite pleased.

Its obvious Musk is going to get his compensation package, which could bring his net worth close to 600 billion. Then Tesla will bring in xAI into the fold. Apparently people still think Tesla is only a car company as they constantly obsess and associate the stock prices to the auto division. Megapacks are becoming more profitable than the auto side. And that is all before Optimus. Optimus needs xAI computer power.
