That playoff performance really made people forget how much most of us were over him after the regular season. He didn’t look good
Fred was down this year, but it is not only his performance. It is his fit on this team that is uber athletic and needs to play a fast pace. He is very deliberate and can’t get to the basket. He is easily guarded one on one. The fact that he shot worse and was injured yet again, is not a good sign going forward. His role should be backup PG and should rarely play more than 25 mins.
We're sorta in the "We're damned if we do, or damned if we don't" situation. I don’t have a great answer, but feel pretty much like you described above.
This upcoming season is where Stone shows if he's really got the chops to be a good GM. He needs to make the correct assessment on all these players.
While I think building around Sengun and Amen and letting the rest of the core develop is wise, one can’t watch these eastern conference finals and not be reminded that Indy traded for their franchise guy in Halliburton, and New York signed Brunson and traded for KAT. None of those guys were drafted by the team they are playing for in the conference finals. it’s not that we shouldn’t make trades…even involving our core. It’s that we shouldn’t make desperate or bad trades that shortchange our future to chase aging stars. We just have to make sure we aren’t giving up too much in a trade. But I think absent a real franchise boosting trade, continuing to develop the core is a great fallback. I agree with t those who say we can’t run back that same backcourt. One of Jalen or Fred needs to go. We’ve got 2 yrs of data showing they don’t fit well together.
OMG; his shooting last yr was so frustrating. It would also be nice to have a point guard that could drive to the rim without getting blocked once on a while. As an undersized guard Fred’s game will age poorly.
The problem is getting an elite PG in this league is like finding a needle in a haystack. You want to find a PG better than Fred? Then we have to trade at least some of our young guys.
We drafted one last year. Ime just needs to play Reed. He excelled every time he was given a real opportunity rather than short stints. Reed is going to b an amazing point guard before it is all said and done. He, Alpi, and Amen will be our big three. All three have truckloads of BBIQ and are extremely unselfish. All we need is for Ime to give Reed real playing time and he will be starting by the end of the season.
Yea reed only 20, he should get back up mins this season, probably will give Fred 2 + 1 team option contract, with Reed moving into as the starter by year 3 . That's if they don't include him as a sweetener in a all in trade for star, down the road.
fair, but Ime did give both Reed and Cam an opportunity to stick in the rotation beginning last year. They just didn’t take advantage. Hopefully they’ll be more ready to play coming into next season.
Reed looked terrible last season. He's a shooting specialist who couldn't shoot. He definitely didn't excel in any way. I definitely didn't excel in practice either because Ime played Aaron Holiday minutes when it mattered and sat Reed on the bench. This past season, Aaron Holiday was a much better player than Reed. That doesn't mean Reed can't improve with time but your evaluation of him is based on college performance and hope. The odds of Reed Sheppard someday becoming a better player than current FVV are not great.
He shot over 40% from 3 after a brief stint in RGV with coaches who fixed what Ime broke due to his gross incompetence in less than one game. If drafted by literally any other team, Reed Sheppard is the unanimous ROY. Blaming him for Ime's incompetence is quite the hot take.
The only thing worse than the mass Jalen delusion is the Reed Sheppard delusion. I'm fine with seeing how he does next year as the backup point guard. That's reasonable. He looked terrible last season. Any suggestion though that he's part of our core moving forward or will make FVV expendable is a bad take. Also, Ime is a terrific coach who overachieved with our roster. The issue is that Ime's priority is not developing our prospects but rather in winning. This creates a problem because Reed and Cam both need opportunities to develop. I think we would be wise to trade both those guys (and Jalen) for some experienced pieces. I think our youngsters would be better off as starters are non-playoff teams where they can get more opportunity.
Every time he was given legitimate opportunity he looked really good... again this is just you blaming him for Ime being an incompetent coach when it comes to player management and rotations. A guy like Jalen has had all the opportunity in the world for 4 years and just sucks, Reed Sheppard has had almost no opportunity but he's shined every time Ime slipped up and accidentally gave him a tiny bit of opportunity.
Only Amen might be a core piece....the rest could be traded for better players. Alpi is not a core without a 3pt shot. DD
