Lance was awesome and a guy who any knowledgeable fan would want in the batter's box instead of Biggio and Bagwell once postseason began.

He just doesn't meet the threshold of the major running numbers -- namely, < 400 HRs, < 1500 RBIs (he's way off there). He also has 0 MVPs.

So YES, he needed a couple more prime years to increase those totals to have a more legit HOF case.

 

Looks pretty equal to me

 

Counting stats don't mean didley when you are face of mlb for almost a decade. It was the definition of fame. He was a sure lock, but there is that one thing and that shadow is a nasty one. People hold grudges for a long time.

Bagwell has 54% higher career WAR, his 7 year peak was 24% higher, and his per game was 33% higher. It’s not just counting stats, Bagwell had a higher peak as well.

Bagwell is borderline top 5 1B of all time. Berkman is well below the average hall of fame LF and maybe cracks someone top 25 list.

No offense to Berkman he was very good. Bagwell was at another level. The difference between an all star and an MVP.

 

It’s a lot closer than you think. Bagwell played longer. If Lance had 2 or 3 more peak years, I think he’s in the hall. Sure, Bagwell was better. Nobody denies that.

If you want to talk about offense only then yes, they aren’t that far away, but that’s only part of baseball.

They both played for 15 years. Bagwell’s WAR on a per game basis was 33% higher. There’s a reason one is in the hall and one lasted one ballot.

 

Yep, offense is all I was talking about. Berkman was a corner outfielder a lot of his career. Bagwell had like 1300 more at bats than Berkman too. Bagwell has the higher peak and the longer prime.
