If the Astros have to add a SP like Lynn who is currently a FA, I would just as soon keep starting the AAA guys.

How long would it take to build a current FA SP up? The need is now.

And a current 40 man roster guy would need to go.

How much better than the current options do we expect a guy like that to be?

Just use Gordon, Gusto, Blubaugh, Walter, and maybe even Ivey and Ullola.

Hurry back Spencer and also Cristian.

It's funny how nobody at all even expects Garcia to return this season, possibly ever. We don't even get updates about him anymore, it's like the org is trying to memory hole him, and it's working.

I thought they said he had a setback earlier this year. But maybe I am making that up due to elbow PTSD.

Yeah he must be toast if we can't even get some of those bullshit updates like "his arm is feeling better...he is thinking about throwing soon"

He's had at least two setbacks that we know of. Probably another in the offseason. Crazy how he was going thru rehab starts with the Hooks last July then all the sudden isn't expected back at all. Did they botch his surgery? Who the **** knows

I have a signed jersey from an incredibly nice former Astro that I have a bit of a business relationship with- Kyle Weiland- of Weiland island fame. It’s funny/ he knows that bit and thinks it’s funny.

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/astros/article/yordan-alvarez-hand-update-20343389.php

Houston Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez took a small step toward returning from a hand injury by hitting off a pitching machine, manager Joe Espada said Friday.

Alvarez did not hit against a machine on the field. He did run bases and do defensive work in left field at Daikin Park before the Astros’ game against the Mariners. As of Thursday, Espada indicated that Alvarez had yet to test his right hand by hitting against a machine. Espada said Friday that Alvarez had hit off the machine and planned to do another round of hitting after his on-field work.

“He wants to go in there and (hit) again just to see how it reacts after he’s sitting for an hour, just to test it again, which is a great sign,” Espada said.

Alvarez has not played since May 2 due to a muscle strain in his right hand. Alvarez said Monday through an interpreter he still felt pain in the hand when swinging. Espada said Alvarez was throwing – for which he uses the right hand – and doing outfield drills prior to Friday. He did not give any specific timetable for when Alvarez might be able to rejoin the team.

“I’m very happy where he is today, but we are going to continue to take one day at a time,” Espada said. “I don’t want to get ahead of ourselves here. We need him in the lineup. But we need him in the lineup when he’s healthy and he can stay in the lineup for a long time.”

    Spencer Arrighetti update

Starter Spencer Arrighetti, recovering from a right thumb fracture, is scheduled to be re-evaluated by a doctor next week and could receive clearance to resume playing catch, Espada said.

Arrighetti has been sidelined since April 7. General manager Dana Brown indicated in a radio appearance this week Arrighetti could require a spring training-type buildup before he is activated.

    Hayden Wesneski surgery

Hayden Wesneski was scheduled to have Tommy John surgery on Friday, Espada said. Wesneski said he would have the procedure performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Dallas.

What a jolt a return would be. Skeptical though.

I doubt it would be before September and probably not until next year, but I’m no doctor.

Does anyone know if he hits free agency next year?

He's a FA in 2027. But if he doesn't emerge from this season healthy, they could refuse the arb offer next offseason like they did with Urquidy.

Does “emerge healthy” mean playing this season?

To be fair, he is kind of forcing Joe's hand with that .465 OPS the past two weeks. Heck, that's even better than the red hot Brendan Rodgers
