Yeah that's always been the case, it's actually hilarious that the SOF's think they're the same as the fans of other players on the team.

 

The primary difference between the SOF types and the Jalen first types is that Sengun is actually good... so their interests are aligned for the moment with the best interests of the team.

The interests of the Jalen fans run counter to the interests of the team because their guy sucks.

All player only or player first fans are just awful... but when the interests of the player only or player first fan happen to be aligned with the interests of the team, it's not a problem.

 

They traded Dream, they traded Franchise, they traded Harden.

As long as they don't trade me, I'm good, and even then I'll still be a fan.

Are so-called SOF's really as bad as all that?

When we had Jeremy Lin, I watched a game with my wife in upper deck seats in Toyota Center. We were the only non-Asians in our section. They were all rooting for Lin....and the CP3 Clippers (our opponent).

Whenever Lin didn't have the ball, the "fans" had eyeballs glued to their goddamned phones.

Once after a game when Lin took a giant sh*t (might have been that same game), I posted a mild rebuke of his mistakes here. I've described that day as The Matrix Revolutions because all the Agent Smiths---Agent Wangs (too racist? Google tells me it's the most common surname in China)---were all over me. Kept multiplying no matter how much I said, "Look, what I said was mild. Nothing."

I don't see the same sort of hysteria with Sengun. Maybe a few posters here; but why dwell on them?

Maybe. But then there are those (it seems) who act like Sengun's weaknesses far outstrip his positives. More, "Sengun missed a free throw!", than, "If it weren't for Sengun this wouldn't have even been a game."

Those who would rather see him traded just so his fans go with him.

 

They're not any more, they were a couple of years ago when they were running around all over the forum crying racism at everything and calling everybody stupidheads or some other weird insults. It's just that they never had the awareness that they were a unique group amongst the "fan club" type fans. As Reeko said, nobody who stans for Amen joined the forum because Amen was drafted. Same goes for Jalen, Jabari, Tari, Sheppard and Cam. As to the Lin stuff that was before my time so I can't comment, but how many of them are still here as Rockets fans? I'd hazard that if Sengun gets traded that all of the "Jalen only fans" "Amen only fans" and "Jabari only fans" are still here, the Sengun fans? What do you think?

It definitely was really bad for a while right when he got drafted. But Clutch banned a lot of them. And a lot of them also just kind of gave up and quit posting.

A serious question though to all the guys who can't stand SOFs, how many of those guys are still here? I can remember a bunch of usernames off the top from that time, but none are here anymore. There is really only one guy who comes to mind that still posts here and he barely posts anymore. They're pretty much all gone.

Yeah I agree with this, the ones who stayed all turned out to be cool posters from what I've seen. The bizarro world situation is where the contingent of anti-Jalen posters try and project the behaviour of SOF's onto Jalen supporters like they're the same and like they're "only fans" as opposed to just slightly unhinged Rockets fans at times haha. I hardly think you can put Mathloom in the same category as the SOF's who've said stuff like they'd have made Jalen their b**** and sexually abused them in highschool - that's the difference between the "SOF's" and the "JOF's" in truth. Mathloom might irritate some with his optimistic chapter series of essay posts, but his heart is in the right place, I genuinely can't say the same for a lot of the other side of the Jalen argument, and that has nothing to do with SOF's as much as it does Jalen's haters.

 

Just because you posted at cfans.net before doesn't mean that people don't become so attached to a player they are basically irrational and become player over team, just like fchowd0311 did. They transfer from team first to player first.

It is also certainly possible that some people became fans of the Rockets solely because of Jalen, just like what happened with Lebron, or are you saying only foreigners are player only fans? Do you claim to know every member's motivation for becoming a fan of the team (or player)?

the problem with the take you quoted, it is bothered by posters joining because of a player more than irrational, dishonest, or disruptive posters.

Isn’t defending a player irrationally regardless of performance the trademark of an only fan? If it bothers one less when from a Houston fan, I am not sure that is a good thing. It is the behavior, words and actions that count, not other factors.

 

seems to me like those people are on the opposite spectrum of those who proclaim Sengun to be the “franchise player” while giving him none of the criticism or expectations that would come with that label while at the same time having nothing ever be his fault…then there are the rabid SOFs who are mostly relegated to spewing their nonsense on Twitter after Clutch sprinkled holy water on the GARM and yeeted a ton of them off the site

I think that's wishful thinking, plenty of Sengun fans would stay. And no, Jalen can't sniff Lebron's jock, but he definitely had a large following before he was even a Rocket. Certainly there are posters that were not Rockets fans before Jalen.

Also, yes, as deranged as fchowd0311 had become I believe he would have left the team if Jalen was traded, part of the reason he was banned.

No, you didn't say only foreigners are player only fans, that's why I'm asking because I don't know for certain. I ask again, who do you think are the main culprits though? Who are the "them" you refer to?

I can think of some posters that would no longer be Rockets fans if Jalen left, but if I name them, then it becomes a poo flinging contest and that's not what I am trying to do. Ultimately, it would be conjecture, as we cannot read minds, so neither you nor I can guarantee one way or another.
