But does he have an elite skillset? He shot 52% his one year in college. That is sandwiched by a 37% 3pt shot in high school and 33% in his lone NBA season. We hope he can shoot, but all we have so far is one outlier season.
Yes he does......he has proven when he gets time he improves.....he should have been playing all year....keeper. DD
To build confidence and establish a rhythm. This is a very common requirement for young entrants into the league.
The same reason every other young player benefits from playing time. He was a rookie going against the best athletes he will ever play. Nerves, adjusting to the game speed, adjusting to the length, the athleticism, the smaller windows, ect... Theres lots of things you can only adjust to by being given extensive minutes. Playing helps players get better. Its also why teams utilize the gleague. We really didnt do either with Reed. Didnt send him down for more than a very short stint and wouldnt give him real minutes with the big club. Malpractice.
It’s not a requirement. Many players use limited minutes to show their skillset and work their way into the rotation. Ime gave him time in the first 24 games and he didn’t prove much. He got lots of opportunities over the season. I’m not saying he’s definitely a bust, but a lot of the hope is based on one season that, so far, looks to be a little bit of an outlier. Someone with near perfect mechanics ought to be able to make shots fall a little more regularly.
False. How many rookies with 1 season of college experience work their way into the rotation on a team that finished #2 in the conference? Very few. Not many, as you erroneously suggest. Very few. Reed did not have consistent playing time, and it's extremely difficult for a 20 year old to build confidence and establish a rhythm without consistent playing time. Ime did not adequately invest in Reed... and when we needed shooting in the playoffs, we were not prepared. Ime did not play the long game -- he chose not to develop Reed. And while it might have helped the team win a game or two more in regular season, it left us with a glaring hole (outside shooting) in the playoffs. An avoidable mistake by Ime.
breh needs to shell out 50k and spend a week with the rockets legend. brokeback novak should be able to fast track his shooting and decision making.
Sheppard just needs to add some muscle and tighten his handle a little bit. Fits right in with our hardworking and coachable culture. Honestly if his only job was to play as the hybrid guard next to Chris Paul and his defense was protected by Wemby's shot blocking on a team that doesn't really care about wins, he would have had a great rookie season too. Stephon Castle would never have gotten serious minutes on our team either, Udoka HATES turnovers and missed defensive assignments. He's madly in love with FVV getting 40 minutes, no rookie was going to change that if Amen couldn't change that. Still very optimistic about Reed's future. He's a potentially amazing fit with Amen - can guard the 1 on defense and be an amazing spacer while Amen runs the offense. Sengun and Green benefit greatly too, he's essentially a taller, faster off-ball FVV. This team has looked great when FVV is on the floor and doesn't dominate the ball.
Reed did great head to head against the current MVP. Therefore Reed will be a future MVP. For more in depth basketball analysis subscribe to my newsletter.
Ask Ray Allen or any other elite shooter to play inconsistent spot minutes with no guarantee game after game and you'll likely see a lot of established shooters shoot fairly poorly. If you've played ball, getting on the court and being allowed to get into the flow of the game and establish a rhythm makes all the difference in the world, within that game, but also on a game to game basis. It's the equivalent of telling someone in baseball to sit in the dugout for a few games, and then suddenly go up and go hit 100 mph heaters and big league breaking balls in the 9th inning after sitting all game long.
Thanks for sharing @DaDakota. The thing I took from watching this video was how quickly Reed gets his shot off after receiving the pass. Squaring up and his release are a beautiful thing. He makes it look natural and effortless, which if you've played you know it's not that easy. While he needs to add some muscle, I'd rather he do it over a period of years versus a massive gain this offseason. If he focuses on ball-handling, agility (believe every player should continually work on this) and adding some muscle, he'll be ready to contribute more. Of course the wildcard is moves we make and if FVV is brought back. Ime's reliance on FVV is starting to remind me of Dusty and Maldonado.
