Walmart is not a great store. I worked for Walmart and loved working there, but made $6.55/hr despite being a great employee. I was in college with a paid for apartment and scholarship for school, so it was mostly just gas money for me. But what makes Walmart terrible is business practice that drove out competitors by taking losses on products and their extreme anti-union behavior.
Big Box stores were gonna take over anyway. Right now starting pay is $14 in Texas which is good compared to other Texas low level jobs. Besides clothes Walmart has ever I need. When Target and Walmart starts selling groceries, it was game over
I don't want to turn this into a Walmart thread. I don't make a lot and therefore don't spend a lot. I don't buy specialty items. I needed a new television. Walmart sells 38" televisions for $88 I Do you know people who work there? It's a retail job. Don't know about benefits but $14 an hour is very competitive in Houston Retail jobs alr big box stores expect people to be fast. I don't feel sorry for Mom and pops. Those days are over in every market. I get it but it's Walmart or Amazon. It's economic evolution
Walmart is a massive global shipping/warehousing/distributing enterprise. The logistics of it are kind of mind boggling.
I understand that, I knew a few distribution center employees. It no different from any other, pay and expectations So what about labor relations? What are the bad stories?
@Buck Turgidson I think Walmart is an easy target being the largest retailer. When I hear attacks on benefits, pay, and conditions I need specifics. These stores compete on having your product on the shelf. It's all about getting the product from Distribution Center to store. All distribution centers pay incentives for speed. It's the same job at Krogers, HEB, Target, Walmart
Any specifics? All these jobs in Texas are competitive with each other. Nobody pays much more than Walmart. All the Distribution Centers have the same expectations. Just name one thing that makes it so bad. I'm sure all these companies put a lot of research in what they can get away with on pay. Working in a retail store is job a kid in highschool can do.
wasnt walmart pullling off some b.s. where they kept their employees under a certain amount of hours per week and paid them the absolute minimum so that the employees were eligible for food stamps and medicare? and walmart was actually helping/guiding their employees through the process to get said benefits? mooching off the taxpayer instead of paying their employees properly.

Amazon may be my favorite corporation. Uber and WalMart are up there. From a consumer perspective, there are fantastic companies. There is an easy solution to this: get rid of food stamps and Medicaid (which is what I assumed you meant, since Medicare is not dependent upon income and only applies to people 65 or older).
Taking away food and medical benefits solves what problem? It is not like Walmart willl make up the difference.
Target pays $15.75. in Houston, when you have no skills that's not bad. It's not great in the grand scheme obviously but it's a job anybody can do. It's literally economics
@No Worries Walmart is very strong financially. Amazon is considered a well pay job for the skills needed to perform he job. Walmart can obviously pay more. This where the assault on unions has gotten us There is a retail worker union, it includes Canadians and only has 100k members. This has been eye opening for me. Walmart has a debt rating of AA
