The Astros have a serious glaring problem with how they handle injured players.

    @matthewkawahara

•Jose Altuve is batting third for the first time since 2020. Joe Espada: "It’s more just a different look, see if it sparks something here and gets Altuve going a little more." Altuve is in a 1-for-18 and hitting .176 in his last 22 games after hitting .305 in his first 22.

•Forrest Whitley is here but not being activated today. Espada said Whitley is here as “a possibility” to be activated during the series.

•Brandon Walter is here as an option to provide coverage tomorrow, Joe Espada said. Ryan Gusto is a possibility to start tomorrow but will be available in the bullpen tonight, Espada said.

•Yordan Alvarez, through an interpreter, said his hand is “getting better” but he still feels it when he swings. Alvarez said he played with the hand hurting for “a while” but it reached a point where “I had to stop because the hand started getting inflamed.” Alvarez said he is hitting in the cage and unsure of a timeline to return. He said if he’s pain free, “It could be tomorrow, it could be the next day, but we’re going to keep working for it to be 100 percent.”

Of all the things to be dysfunctional at.

I agree, but how does that happen in a professional sports franchise in 2025?

This isn't 1876 " rub some mud on it."

Shaping up to be another Tucker like situation. Not saying he will be out that long but IMO it’s going to be longer than we think. Unlike the Tucker situation though, this team isn’t going to go on a run without him in this lineup.

It's already longer than we think. Those ****ers sat him one day and called it day to day and then put him on the IL and said it was basically a precaution and he'd probably be back as soon as he was eligible which was 6 days ago, and now we are looking at at least another series.
Take whatever nonsense the Astros say and at least double it, and then you might be sort of getting close to maybe the right ballpark.

They just don't divulge stuff to the media.... much like all other teams. The only leagues that enforce more transparency are the ones where the betting action mandates more game to game information. Till MLB has a similar "arrangement", expect the lack of transparency to continue.

If only the human body were as predictable or on schedule as the start times for games...

If the hand doesnt respond with rest, you either have him playing hurt again (which apparently he was doing all year without great results).... or possibly making it worse. They decided him playing like he has the first 2 months isn't really worth the possibility of him making it worse.

Of course I'm fully expecting an announcement next week that he had season ending surgery.

Yordan: “hand inflammation” —> “muscle strain”

•Starts as generic [body part] discomfort — “[So and so] has left the game with [body part] discomfort. He is considered day to day.”
•Astros: “Saw [injured player] in the cage/around the clubhouse. Doing “really well”, we just want to take a few extra days just to be sure/cautious.”
•[Days/weeks go by] No timetable for his return but doing “really well”. “Want him 100% healthy for the long haul.”

It is pretty shitty they make the manager go out there and not their **** medical staff.

May 3: Yordan Alvarez is being scratched due to inflammation in his right hand, Joe Espada said. Alvarez has been dealing with the issue for a few days and was sore after pregame hitting.

May 4: Joe Espada said Yordan Alvarez is feeling better but the Astros want to stay away from using him today.

May 5: The Astros placed Yordan Alvarez on the IL with right hand inflammation, they announced.
May 5: Yordan Alvarez is flying back to Houston, per a team spokesperson.

May 7: Yordan Alvarez was diagnosed with a muscle strain on the top of his right hand, Joe Espada said. The Astros’ hope is he’ll be OK with rest and have a minimum IL stint. Espada termed it “good news.”

May 19: Yordan Alvarez, through an interpreter, said his hand is “getting better” but he still feels it when he swings.

June 3: Kyle Tucker is in pain after fouling a ball off his right shin. A trainer is out checking on him. Tucker was going to stay in the game. But he tried to jog a couple steps and promptly stopped. He is now leaving the game.
June 3: Kyle Tucker has a right shin contusion; X-rays were negative and he is day-to-day, Joe Espada said.
June 3: Tucker: "We did some X-rays and nothing was broken or anything. I’m sure we’ll do some more stuff tomorrow and whatnot. Right now it’s just kind of hurting. But it’s all right, we’ll get through it."

June 4: Kyle Tucker is sore and was still using crutches today to keep weight off his leg, Joe Espada said. Tucker was evaluated again by doctors and is still day-to-day, Espada said, but safe to assume he’s unavailable tonight.

June 5: Kyle Tucker is “making progress,” but Bregman is in a “better spot” to return Friday, Joe Espada said.

June 7: Kyle Tucker is still day to day, Joe Espada said: “The progress has been slower than what we expected, but he is doing much better.”
June 7: The Astros put Kyle Tucker on the injured list due to a right shin contusion, they announced.

June 8: Kyle Tucker is still using one crutch to walk but said he's improving. He said he hopes to get on the field to do baseball activities by the first day in San Francisco.

June 12: Kyle Tucker is unlikely to return Friday, Joe Espada said. Tucker still isn’t doing baseball activities. Espada didn’t rule out his returning during the Tigers series.

June 18: Kyle Tucker is still not doing activities on the field. Espada said the Astros were hoping he could resume some of that today, but Tucker is still limited to work in the weight room.
June 18: Joe Espada on Kyle Tucker's shin: "We keep looking at it. It’s just taking a while to heal. The soreness is still there. But there is no damage to the bone. It just needs some time to heal."

June 21: Kyle Tucker is running on the treadmill but has not resumed on-field activities - Joe Espada reiterated hope that will happen this weekend.

June 25: Kyle Tucker took swings off a tee Sunday and "could start running within the next few days," according to the Astros.

June 28: Kyle Tucker took about 35 swings in the cage today. Joe Espada said Tucker's swings were "more fluid" and he ran on the treadmill again, but Tucker is still not doing on-field activities.
June 28: Kyle Tucker on his shin injury: "Every day it’s getting a little better. But never really had that big jump forward that we would hope for. But can’t really do much about it. ... Just got to keep working at it and try to get better and hopefully get out there pretty soon."

July 4: Kyle Tucker and Justin Verlander are unlikely to return before the All-Star break, Joe Espada said.

July 11: Kyle Tucker is playing catch on the field at Minute Maid Park. He hasn't done on-field activities since sustaining the shin contusion June 3.

July 21: Kyle Tucker is taking groundballs in the outfield at T-Mobile Park. Not testing a lot of lateral movement but more than we’ve seen on the field.

July 30: Kyle Tucker was transferred to the 60-day IL.

August 11: Kyle Tucker will meet the Astros in Tampa. Joe Espada said he thinks Tucker is "getting close" to running bases.

August 12: Kyle Tucker is taking flyballs in the outfield at Tropicana Field. That's after he played catch and did some exercises and light running on the turf.

August 17: Kyle Tucker is hitting on the field at Minute Maid Park
August 17: Kyle Tucker took on-field batting practice today, then discussed his recovery. Asked if he is confident he will be able to play again this season, Tucker said: “I’m trying to. If I didn’t think so, I wouldn’t be doing all this stuff.” Tucker: “Some days it feels great. Some days it’s feeling a little bit more sore and I can’t really do as much. But I think I’m progressing in the right direction. It’s just taking forever. Some good things, some frustrating things, but kind of just have to deal with it.”

August 27: Kyle Tucker has progressed to “sprinting” in the outfield, Joe Espada said. He said Tucker could be close to running bases.

August 29: Kyle Tucker was running in the outfield at Minute Maid Park and is now taking groundballs in right field and throwing to bases.
August 29: Kyle Tucker said he has done some light running on the bases. He said he is building up strength after the long layoff and not being able to do much.

August 30: Kyle Tucker is taking live BP at Minute Maid Park.

September 1: Astros GM Dana Brown told the team's pregame show that Kyle Tucker could "potentially play maybe Wednesday or Thursday" in Cincinnati.

September 2: Kyle Tucker did accompany the Astros to Cincinnati. He's doing running drills in the outfield at Great American Ballpark.
September 2: The Astros now "suspect" Kyle Tucker sustained a shin fracture when he fouled a pitch off his leg June 3, GM Dana Brown said today.
September 2: Joe Espada said the Astros want Kyle Tucker to run bases again, likely Wednesday, after Tucker ran at about 85% with "no issues" in the outfield today. "There’s still a possibility that we could get him on the field here pretty soon. What he did today ... checked a lot of boxes."
September 2: Kyle Tucker said initial imaging on his shin "came up with a lot of inflammation and swelling in the general area. And then after a little bit of time and continued imaging after swelling and everything kind of calmed down, it was revealed there was a little fracture in my shin." Tucker did not specify when the fracture was revealed: "I think we did a pretty good job rehabbing it regardless. I think timeframe-wise it probably roughly would have been the same. Obviously, you never know. But it kind of is what it was at the time."

September 4: Kyle Tucker is taking another live BP against an Astros minor-league pitcher here in Cincinnati.
September 4: Joe Espada said it’s “unlikely” the Astros would activate Kyle Tucker tomorrow but did not rule it out. He termed the decision “day-to-day” at this point.

September 5: Joe Espada said the hope is Kyle Tucker can be activated tomorrow. The Astros are gauging how Tucker recovers from his pregame work here the last few days.

September 6: Kyle Tucker has been reinstated from the IL.

Think there's a similar problem with our pitchers needing TJS so often ??

    We average ~2/season
