Bush campaign site blocks traffic from abroad

The folks in charge of the U.S. president's re-election campaign seem to have forgotten that the first two letters of WWW stand for "world wide."
Just days before the presidential election, the Bush campaign's official Web site, GeorgeWBush.com, is turning away Web traffic from abroad. The virtual blockade began Monday, according to Internet traffic analysis company Netcraft.

The site appears to be rejecting visitors from most points outside the United States, while allowing access from most U.S. locations and Canada, according to Netcraft, which is based in Bath, England. The company monitors Web site response times from numerous locations around the globe, including New York; London; Amsterdam, Netherlands; and Sydney, Australia.

An attempt by a CNET News.com reader in the Netherlands to access the site brought up an "Error 403 Forbidden" page with the message: "Access Denied: You don't have permission to access 'http://www.georgewbush.com/' on this server."

Representatives at the Bush campaign office did not immediately return calls for comment.

Netcraft suspects the traffic shutout may be an intentional move on the part of the Bush team to ensure the heavily visited site is available to U.S. voters in the final days of the campaign. The company said it saw no indication that the situation was the result of an attack by hackers.

The campaign recently began using Web traffic management tools from Akamai after an outage last week knocked the Bush-Cheney and Republican National Committee sites offline for several hours, Netcraft said. The Akamai service, called EdgeScape, allows the owner of a Web site to exclude visitors from certain geographies, Akamai spokesman Jeff Young said. However, Young would not comment on anything related to GeorgeWBush.com.

"We are not at liberty to discuss certain customers and what we do for them," Young said.

There will likely be no love lost with many in Europe over the traffic situation. Polls there indicate resounding support among Europeans for presidential rival John Kerry. But it doesn't help the Bush campaign when it comes to swaying the millions of Americans who may cast votes from abroad. According to a Pentagon representative, 3.7 million American civilians live overseas, and 500,000 troops are now based in other countries. Their votes could be crucial in what is shaping up to be a very tight race.

Most military personnel access the Internet through the .mil domain, which may allow them to visit the Bush site, Netcraft noted. And for civilians determined to access the site from abroad, a number of U.S.-based Internet proxy services, such as Proxify.com, may help them connect.

Still, the move is unlikely to improve Bush's reputation when it comes to being Web savvy. During a televised debate earlier this month the president mistakenly referred to the Net in the plural, as "the Internets." That blunder came just days after Vice President Dick Cheney fouled up during his own debate. Cheney meant to direct viewers to Factcheck.org, a Web site that supported his arguments, but he accidentally directed them to FactCheck.com, a site linked to Bush critic George Soros.

They really know how to deal with the axis of evil Internets! That should teach them a lesson! ;)

Bush can't hide from UK surfers
    October 28, 2004
    Claire Woffenden

Surfers that have been unable to visit the official re-election site of President George W Bush all week can access the site through an alternative address.

International access to www.georgewbush.com appears to have been blocked since the start of Monday, reports net monitoring firm Netcraft.

When surfers in the UK type in the web address www.georgewbush.com, the following message appears: "You are not authorized to view this page. You might not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied".

However, surfers in the UK can still access the site using either https://georgewbush.com or http://65.172.163.222. UK net users can access the election site for presidential candidate John Kerry at www.johnkerry.com, as well as www.georgebush.co.uk.

Netcraft reports that its monitoring stations in London, Amsterdam and Sydney, Australia have failed to access the www.georgewbush.com site since early Monday morning. Yet four US monitoring stations have had no problems and net users in Canada can also visit the site.

It is unclear why access has been denied for surfers outside the US and Canada, although some publications report a Bush campaign spokesman as saying: "the measure was taken for security reasons."

According to Netcraft, excluding non-US requests could be "denying access to the Bush campaign site to some registered voters, including American residents who are living overseas but eligible to vote by absentee ballot".

Why would anyone do this? Is there something I am missing? A possible site crashing attempt from outside the US? Someone educate me here.

Why would the international community want to go to georgewbush.com anyways?

    Basically, I would say this:

    SOD OFF YOU EUROTRASH.

We should have never bothered to save your sorry asses from two world wars. In the latter one, we should have let Hitler and Stalin have their respective ways with you sorry excuses for humanity. And we should have saved all that money we wasted on the Marshall Plan.

I always look forward to your thoughtful and balanced posts, gwayneco. I'll be sure to forward this one to my wife's Dutch cousin, who spent a few years in a Nazi concentration camp in the Netherlands for attempting to escape to Switzerland. He was caught at the border, and was lucky that he looked so Aryan that he wasn't shot. Instead, he got to live on starvation rations, and watch Jews and Gypsies get shot as a diversion.

You're right, our help was a complete waste of time, and totally unappreciated. Thank you for the education.

    D&D... we persevere.

You do know that the U.S. and Russia were both responsible for aiding in Germany's defeat. It's not like we came in and beat Hitler by ourselves.

Why is that? They have only scorned us for the last 50 plus years and I have no patience with them and their moronic journalists.

Now, my tone was a bit of joke, but it's not like I advocated shooting a Euro leader like the UK Guardian advocated killing GWB.

And, of course, Saddam never brutalized anybody right? If France et al had their way, this man would still be in power.

Okay, so it was not a joke...well, FWIW, I did report that post and hope gwayneco gets banned. I think his post totally crossed the line, even for the D&D.

Not sure what the admins will do, though.

Your post was totally uncalled for, and really had nothing to do with the thread.

    It was pure hate.
