I mean/ that’s basically a 3/100 or 3/110M deal after arbitration. I love Hunter but wouldn’t do that if I was the Astros. 6/120 seems way more reasonable. That’s basically a 3/80M extension. That’s not a screaming bargain for the Astros but it’s a reasonable compromise for guaranteeing Hunter all that money 3.75 years early.

Salaries will be way up in 6 years. It would be a bargain.

I don't know if that is true or not.

Being a SP without a guarantee is very risky. Injury is so common, and without a guarantee, very talented pitchers can cost themselves tens of millions of dollars.

Look at Jose Urquidy who made $3.75M in 2024. If he wasn't hurt, his regular arbitration progression would have put him over $6M, instead the Astros released him and he had to find a $1M contract.

Some pitchers never find another MLB deal.

God forbid Hunter gets hurt, but there is a greater than 0% chance he never makes $10M in his career.

Getting an extension now is still a benefit. AND becoming a FA at an early enough age to still have good earning power is a benefit.

That's why I think a 5 year extension, buying out 2 FA seasons is good. I think it puts enough money in the bank but doesn't kill his future earning potential.

What would hurt him, is a 7 or 8 year extension making him a free agent at 34 or 35, meaning his chances of getting another $100M contract is very small.

I think it's a bit rich, but yes I think he would take it.

If it was 2 arb and 4 FA years, that would be a better value for the Astros.

Well I just think we’d lose him after the arb years and 25 million a year is a bargain for an ace, especially in years 4 through 6.

McCullers not being able to throw consistent strikes and only being able to last 3 innings doesn't really help the starting pitching. Welp...3 run HR.....

This is gonna be a short outing. Already at 25 pitches. Can’t find the zone and the curve isn’t breaking.

Lance does not have it. 88-92 on his FB (that he can’t control) and absolutely no command or movement on his slider. Hes pretty much worthless out there in this condition.

    Yep.

I can't remember when they did away with the "draft and follow" JUCO guys but he was one of those.

His tractor gets some credit too.
