OK...so I'm getting my son...(and me)....a Gamecube for Christmas. Last night I saw used games at the mall for significantly cheaper than buying them new. Any drawbacks to this? My wife suggested they might be scratched..anyone bought used games and had a problem??
I've never had a problem buying used games (PC or PS2), GameSpot I believe will let you exchange if it's stratched does Gamecube still use cartridges or has Nitendo switched to discs finally? I dunno I've never played a gamecube
No problems for me so far since games went to discs instead of the cartridges. Knock on wood. If they won't play, you can return them. Make sure you find out the return policy before buying.
They use these mini DVD's. My friend, who may be full of crap, say they run backwards. Kind of weird but is supposed to prevent burning games. I'm sure others that are more versed in gaming consoles than me could validate that or not.
cool...yeah, we wondered if they would return games that don't work. that's perfect. i can't wait!!!! i mean..it's really all for my son...ah hem...yeah.
I've never bought a used gamecube game, so I wouldn't know. But I imagine they have a return policy if the disc is scratched.
BTW.... I've known a couple of people addicted to Metroid Prime, but I've never played. Smash Brothers and Mariocart are really good multiplayer gmes that I've played that should be great for father and son playing.
Metroid Prime is great. First person is just as good as Halo imo (have Gamecube and Xbox). Metroid Prime 2 is also coming out soon, apparently with multiplayer, but likely nowhere on par with Halo 2. Also, depending on how old your son is, get SuperMonkeyBall - great multi player game for youngsters, and adults (and people on drugs - good colors). There are some other games that are more hit and miss, depending on your game preferences. You may like the Pikmin series - they are really fun, especially the 2nd one which has pretty innovative multiplayer action as well.
I was a little worried about buying used games a while back, but I asked the BBS their opinion on it, which sounded like this. They were right, at least with what I've bought so far. Probably like 4 of may last 7 or 8 games I've bought have been used, and the new ones were either the ESPN-type budget games or an awesome game like GTA:SA. Each of those games has worked fine for me. I got a PS2 though, so I don't know about GC games, but I'd guess it would be similar. I'm not that much of an expect on the way the disc drive reads discs, especially on a GC, so I couldn't tell you about how it reads. All I know about the discs is that they're like 1.5 GB, compared to like 4.7GB, IIRC, for the DVD's in the PS2 and Xbox. However, Nintendo is the master of compression and can still get great bang for the buck. I'm still amazed at the graphics from RE4 and Metroid Prime 1 and 2. As for the GC, I think it would be a great pickup for a kid. I'm sure you already know this, but the games made by Nintendo do have pretty fun gameplay, especially for kids. Plus, they've been getting a little better at getting a little more mature games lately. (See Resident Evil 4) I still prefer a PS2 over it, but it isn't in 2nd place in the world (as of this past summer) for no reason.Yes, I must take a jab at Microsoft in every game related posts and some non-game related posts.
Max, I have the game cube and just about every game that has been done for it. Email me with the age of your son and I will tell you which ones I consider good. As for used games, you bet !! Unless it is a must have, I buy 80% used. DD
The only new games I buy are for the ....uh.... those top tier games that you just HAVE to have new...like Halo 1 and 2, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Burnout 3, the GTA's, etc. But other than that, I go used all the way and never had a problem. And if you need to take a used game back there's no problem in doing so. I bought Slugfest as a gift for a friend awhile back...played it (since it was used and already opened)...hated it and figure'd he would too...so I returned it for another game w/o any hassle. As for the GC... I LOVE Super Monkey Ball...that game is sooo addicting. As is Metroid Prime. Can't go wrong with Mario Party and Smash Brother's. The Rogue Squadron games are good. And for the more mature and challenging gameplay there's always Viewtiful Joe, but beware cause that is really, really......hard.
I've purchased about 40 games for my PS2 over the last few years off Ebay, almost all of them used, and I've never had a single problem. CD/DVD's are very durable, and it's great if you not necessarily always on the cutting edge of what's coming out. Even if you are, it's usually at least $10-15 cheaper.
I've bought games from Block Buster before but you should be careful with that. Cause most people don't give a crap about the cds/dvds so they don't take care of them. bnut they guarrantee the game is in good condition and you can return it if it doesn' work.
Great time to hop on the Gamecube bandwagon as a lot of good titles are now in the $20 range. I just got mine a little over a month ago and have already picked up 8 games. For comparison, I've only purchased two PS2 games in the two years I've owned one and now only keep it around for DVDs. I haven't had any problems with any used shops lately either (Gamestop, Game Crazy, EB Games). A lot of times they will show you the disc you're buying without asking, but if they don't BE SURE YOU MAKE THEM. I remember buying a slew of used Dreamcast games at FuncoLand (ugh, remember that place?) several years back and two of them were scratched and the other one was the wrong freakin' game
Max, there's nothing wrong with used games. Blockbuster has a big selection, in fact, depending on which one you go to. I urge you to get a Xbox, and if you haaaave to, a PS2. If you're not gonna play it, though, and your son is real young, then a Gamecube would work. Think GC for smaller kids, PS2 if you like playing an insuperior system that only happens to have more games because it was out a year longer, and an Xbox if you want a good mix and the best actual system.
Yeah, because we all know that the # of games for the PS2 has nothing to do with there being 70+ million units worldwide, compared to the 15 million each for the GC and Xbox. Developers would definitly try to make games for a system with 15 million units, although they could sell a lot more with 70+ million possible customers. Let's just check how the Xbox is doing in Japan, a place full of gamers and great video game developers: October Sales of systems 11-17 1. GBASP 35,280 2. PS2 22,470 3. Nintendo DS 4. PS2 Redesign 5. GC 4,368 6. GBA 633 7. Xbox 173 Wow....the Xbox is selling like hotcakes since everyone knows how great of a console it is. It may even hold off the Wonderswan for another couple of weeks. However, now that I think about, everyone should buy an Xbox...everyone. At least everyone in China. Just add another billion Xbox consoles to the world. But just don't buy anything else. That way, Microsoft could lose another 2-4 billion dollars on it. Oh yeah, and good mix from the Xbox? Let's think of some RPGs. There's Fable, which isn't really a traditional RPG and really underachieved. There's Morrowind, which looked and played a lot better on the PC. And then there's KOTOR...and that's about it. If I actually wanted a strategy/tactical RPG, I'd be out of luck if I had an Xbox. Ok, I got really off-topic. Sorry about that. Used games are cool and good and great and awesome.
Man, I'm so tired of this "the Gamecube is for little kids" crap. Just because they make games for kids doesn't mean there aren't any games for teenagers and adults. It sucks that you can't get GTA on it, but at the price of $99, people would be stupid to not get one even if they already own a PS2 or an X-Box. True gamers aren't gonna miss out on Mario, Zelda, and Metroid.
