TF was the obsession with brown, puke green and nicotine yellow in the 1970’s?

Kids were allowed to go outside. Good times! We even played outside after dark.

The world we live in now is kinda sad for the kids, and they don’t even know it.

Children held prisoner by their parents fears.

But, it is kinda dangerous out there with all the guns and all.

I don't live in a place like where I grew up, out in the boonies, where if some weirdo showed up I could ghost him in the woods (although my mom had some creepy guy stalk her once when she was riding a horse). I live in a Houston suburb. You know, the human trafficking capital of the US? So yeah, I don't let my younger kids go out in the neighborhood without me. I go with them to the park or to hang out in the cul-de-sac. We have a big back yard with tons to do. They do at least go outside, just not out in the neighborhood alone. Am I sheltering them? Maybe, but it's better than the alternative. I personally know a person in the area who's daughter was kidnapped and murdered by traffickers. They're out there and big business isn't the only entity that can use data to improve performance. Criminals and freaks are organized and talk to each other to exchange expertise. It's not pure paranoia.

Back to talking about terrible 1970's style.

Maybe HISD had their own Police decades ago, but I don't remember smaller School Districts with their own Police or the Police presence was much smaller if they did.

I remember a Teacher chasing after a student that had Pot and two girls fighting with Metal Rakes, but those would be minor issues in the present day.

Without remembering much of the 70s, my initial guess would be that those colors hold up better when discolored by smoke.

I remember my HS getting security when I was a senior, fat police wannabe types with scraggly mustaches. I thought it was weird because it was a safe place. Times be changin'.

When I was in High School, there wasn't much that thieves would want to steal. Computers were in special rooms with raised floors and extra cooling.

The Audio - Visual equipment tended to be All in One Projectors on wheels with the Video Tape loaded in the back with the Screen in front. It was built to pivot to fit through doorways.

My Biology teacher was an Assistant Football Coach and tended to be lazy. He would talk for a few minutes, start the Video and then go to the Teacher's Lounge to drink Coffee. We had to sit in Alphabetical order and I got the duty of taking care of things when the tape finished because I sat closest to the Projector. Since the teacher wouldn't need the Projector for the rest of the day, I had to

    • Rewind the Tape
    • Tilt the Projector so it fit through the doorway and push it down to the Library which was the Check In - Check Out for that stuff.
    • Get one of the Library ladies to acknowledge that I had returned everything in good order.

    With
    • No Guns
    • No High Tech to steal
    • Pot as the strongest thing happening *

there was no real need for School Police when i was in High School.

It was a period where there was a lot of emphasis on crossing over between nature and the man-made creations that had become common in a post-World War society that had large but impersonal and sterile public works. So green and yellow and brown were viewed as earth colors, and harvest based colors. It can be related back to the hippies and bohemians that were prevalent at the time. However - it should be noted that a lot of it was nostalgic for the period around 1900-1920, where there was a push through Europe and parts of America to return to "the earth" and spiritualism.

I personally am not a fan beyond the historical relevance, but it does make sense as a push back against the sterile back drop in art and architecture in the 1940' through early 1960's. Wrapped in all of this as well, is the idea of coziness and gathering places, typically circular in design, which are usually dark in color but surrounded by green or yellow hues, similar to a hut or hobble out in nature.

    It really depends.

It was a great time to be alive if you were an adult white male - and it was also the last generation where there were really strong familiar bonds that extended over into just about all facets of life. From recreation to church - to marriages, to jobs and even schooling -- they were all controlled through familial units. Being an older man in a family in the 1970's was overall pretty awesome. You have had the same wife for many decades, you are close to your adult siblings, you see and socialize with your family and neighbors and life long friends every weekend - you have had the same stable job for many decades, your home is likely paid off --- you smoke and drink when and how you want, food is abundant and you have like 5 total bills to worry about, money socked away in the bank or safety deposit box and you got spending money. Your expected to work and pay the bills, fix things that break around the house and be sweet to your wife - and to be less present but nice to your kids.

Seems like a pretty ****ing great period to be an old man to me.

I got to experience the days before Internet and cell phones when you could be away from the home and couldn't be called in or bothered by work colleagues, and time off was always time off. It was great.

My parents had the green frig, stove top, oven, dish washer, and sink. Their house was built in '75. The sink was the last to go. It almost made it 50 years but was replaced last year.

Pagers. If you were a drug dealer. Or an MD. Which is also a drug dealer.
