Tariffs Cut Both Ways for U.S. Upholstery Manufacturers

Hefty tariffs on Chinese imports are good news for Sean Gibbons’s made-in-the-U.S.A. upholstery business—if they stay in place.

The chief executive of Kings Mountain, N.C., manufacturer STI Fabrics said he already is winning new business from furniture makers looking to switch to domestic suppliers from Chinese vendors. “Now that things are flipped on their head, our fabrics are actually a much better value,” the 59-year-old said.

For example, STI—which makes the brand Revolution Performance Fabrics—sells chenille fabrics wholesale for $3 a yard, while Chinese materials typically sold for $2 to $2.70 a yard, Gibbons said. With a 145% base tariff, that per-yard cost is on track to rise to about $5 or $6.

Gibbons said he and his son, Anderson, the company’s chief revenue officer, have been fielding “constant phone calls, texts, emails—‘when can we meet?’” from furniture makers and retailers over the past several weeks. Gibbons estimated he will need to hire 100 workers for a third shift to produce materials for couches, chairs and ottomans for customers such as Pottery Barn and Room & Board.

But he is taking his time as he hires new staff, with President Trump’s on-again, off-again rollout of new duties making such a big investment risky for now. The Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration is considering slashing tariffs on some Chinese imports by more than half.

If the 145% tariff rate is “going to stay, I needed to add third shift back yesterday,” Gibbons said. “But I’m not sure it’s going to stay.”

The uncertainty is weighing heavily on the domestic textile-manufacturing industry, which has been hit hard over the past 25 years by a flood of Chinese imports that have undercut their prices. Dozens of textile mills have closed across the U.S. over the past two decades, with 28 shutting down just in the past couple of years, according to the National Council of Textile Organizations.

Textile mills employed about 85,500 people in the U.S. in March, according to seasonally adjusted, preliminary employment figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a nearly 80% drop from 25 years ago.

The U.S. last year brought in from around the world more than 1.6 billion square meters of textiles used in making furniture, enough to cover about 300,000 football fields. That is up from 1 billion square meters 25 years earlier in 1999, according to the Census Bureau.

Some U.S. textile makers work with international factories to import materials, including Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Crypton, which has a textile-weaving mill in North Carolina but also sources some fabrics from Chinese vendors. Crypton said some customers are now asking about switching to the company’s made-in-the-U.S.A. fabrics.

There are “new conversations that we’re having with some of our largest customers who have supported the mill in the past, but the majority of the business was fabrics that we were importing from Asia,” said Lance Keziah, the company’s chief executive. Now “the conversation is, ‘What can we do to make fabrics like this out of your North Carolina facility?’”

Still, Keziah said customers are hesitant to make big changes while trade policy is seemingly still in flux. “A lot of customers are concerned,” he said. “Everyone’s kind of scared, because they don’t know where the bottom is right now.”

The International Textile Alliance, which represents 140 companies worldwide including textile makers, said U.S.-based companies face uncertainty beyond the tariffs themselves.

U.S. consumers have recently turned much more pessimistic about the economy, spooked in part by the volatile trade policies. Weak home sales could weigh on the home-furnishings market, which is largely driven by people moving and buying new goods for their houses.

If furniture manufacturers pass tariffs on imported goods along to consumers, raising prices, that could weigh on demand, said David Lappert, board president of the International Textile Alliance.

“No one knows if a $999 sofa is now $1,699, if a $1,999 sofa is now $3,000, what is the effect on the overall industry? Will the consumers trade up, or will the consumers just buy less?” he said.

Furniture makers also could switch their sourcing to textile makers in countries such as India and Turkey, which are subject to a new base tariff of 10% that is far below the tariff on China, Lappert said.

Walter Rothschild, president of North Carolina fabric maker David Rothschild, said more furniture manufacturers are requesting samples of his company’s fabrics to have on hand as they make their pitches to retailers over the next week at a semiannual furniture-industry show in High Point, N.C. “But to date, everything’s so much in the air. I have not seen an uptick in orders yet,” he said.

He, too, is concerned about how a downturn in consumer demand could cause furniture makers to pull back on orders for upholstery. “People don’t buy sofas in the middle of a depression or recession,” Rothschild said.

Beijing’s ‘Made in China’ Plan Is Narrowing Tech Gap, Study Finds

An industrial plan China rolled out a decade ago that was criticized by the U.S. as protectionist has been highly successful in narrowing China’s technological gap with the West, a new study finds.

The study, commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, is set to intensify the debate in Washington and elsewhere over how to counter China’s use of state subsidies and other strategies to bolster its competitiveness.

To placate President Trump during his first-term trade war with China, Beijing dropped mentions of the “Made in China 2025” plan,” leader Xi Jinping’s signature industrial strategy, from public discourse. But the policy stayed in place.

The study, released Monday, shows that enormous state support unleashed under the strategy has enabled China to eliminate or reduce its dependence on imports such as rail and power equipment, medical devices and renewable-energy products. In addition, Chinese companies have become more competitive globally, gaining market share from foreign companies in sectors including shipbuilding and robotics.

The findings in the study, conducted by economic consulting firm Rhodium Group, highlight the stakes for the U.S. and other advanced economies as Beijing continues to advance Xi’s blueprint to make China a leader in high-tech industries.

“China today is very different from China in 2015, and that has a lot to do with an industrial policy that has been predicated upon unprecedented state funding,” said Camille Boullenois, an associate director at Rhodium and lead author of the report. “There is no doubt that China will continue to narrow the gap and increase its competitiveness.”

Beijing unveiled the “Made in China 2025” plan about two years after Xi came to power in late 2012, making it the centerpiece of Xi’s industrial ambitions.

During the previous U.S.-China trade conflict, in 2018 and 2019, Washington tried to get Beijing to change the policy, saying it distorted competition by providing state subsidies to Chinese companies and forcing technology transfer from foreign companies. But a 2020 trade deal instead focused on Chinese commitment to more purchases of American products as opposed to addressing state subsidies and other issues of concern among many U.S. companies.

The new study sponsored by the chamber, a business-lobbying force in Washington, highlights fresh challenges posed by Beijing’s state-led policy at the same time the Trump team is preparing for potential negotiations with China.

Trump has said a trade deal with China has to be fair. However, people close to the administration say it is unclear whether he will attempt to confront Beijing over its use of subsidies and other measures that give Chinese companies an edge over their foreign rivals.

The new study details how government support for the policy has intensified since its inception. Tax benefits to companies in favored sectors surged by an average annual rate of nearly 29% between 2018 and 2022 and reached 1.3 trillion yuan, equivalent to about $185 billion, in 2022—representing more than half of overall corporate spending on research and development.

The proportion of companies enjoying tax deductions and other benefits more than quadrupled between 2015 and 2023, according to the study. In addition, based on available government data, it finds that investment through state-directed funds soared more than fivefold between 2015 and 2020, to $52 billion five years ago.

Meanwhile, according to the report, authorities have increasingly used access to the Chinese market as a way to compel foreign companies to set up production and research centers in China. Such practices have helped the country build up supply chains for products ranging from smartphones to electric vehicles.

As a result, every sector targeted by Made in China 2025, including information technology, high-end machine and medical tools and new materials, has experienced a “substantial reduction” in import dependencies, the study found. For instance, imports as a share of the market for medical devices dropped to 14% in 2023 from 24% in 2015.

“China has been very good at leveraging foreign companies and pressuring them to localize their production and research,” Boullenois said.

According to the report, commercial aircraft is one of a few sectors where Chinese companies still lag behind their U.S. and other Western competitors. China’s homegrown plane maker, Comac, remains reliant on foreign parts to produce domestic equivalents of commercial planes from Boeing and Europe’s Airbus.

But that might change in the coming years, the study predicts, as China makes progress on producing its own aviation engines.

Daniel Rosen, a partner at Rhodium and another co-author of the study, said that Beijing’s bias toward supporting manufacturing over households has created a growing imbalance between domestic supply and demand, especially in sectors such as batteries and electric cars. That, in turn, has led to subsidized Chinese products flooding global markets, raising trade frictions with other countries.

The Trump administration has said it intends to use tariff negotiations with other countries to isolate China, though it isn’t yet clear what specific demands Washington has put forward during those talks.

China’s advantage is the scale of its market and its ability to commercialize products quickly, Rosen said. “There are opportunities for the U.S. to match that scale if the U.S. works in tandem with other economies.”

China Just Made the World’s Fastest Transistor and It Is Not Made of Silicon

At Peking University, a group of Chinese scientists may have just turned the computing industry up on its head.

With a slender sheet of lab-grown bismuth and an architecture unlike anything inside today’s silicon chips, they’ve built what they call the world’s fastest and most efficient transistor. Not only does it outperform the best processors made by Intel and TSMC, but it also uses less energy doing so. And most important of all, there’s no trace of silicon involved.

This two-dimensional, silicon-free transistor represents a radical rethinking of what chips can be and how they can be made.

“If chip innovations based on existing materials are considered a ‘short cut’, then our development of 2D material-based transistors is akin to ‘changing lanes’,” Hailin Peng, professor of chemistry at Peking University and the study’s lead author, told SCMP.

From “fins” to bridges
To understand what’s so groundbreaking about this transistor, it helps to first picture what’s being replaced.

Since the early 1990s, transistors — the tiny switches that drive everything from smartphones to supercomputers — have largely depended on silicon and a design known as the Fin Field-Effect Transistor, or FinFET. These resemble tiny skyscrapers, standing vertically on chips to allow better control of current flow at nanoscale dimensions.

But FinFETs are running out of space — literally. As chips shrink to just a few nanometers, engineers are hitting hard physical limits. Below 3 nanometers, performance gains become harder and power consumption rises. Something has to give.

So, Peng’s team decided not to shrink the old design any further. They scrapped it altogether.

Their new transistor uses a gate-all-around field-effect transistor (GAAFET) structure. Instead of wrapping the gate around three sides of the transistor’s channel like FinFETs do, a GAAFET encircles it on all four. This offers better control of the current and drastically cuts down on wasted energy.

But that’s not new. The real innovation lies in what the transistor is made of.

The bismuth advantage
Rather than silicon, the Peking University team built their transistor using bismuth oxyselenide (Bi₂O₂Se) for the channel, and bismuth selenite oxide (Bi₂SeO₅) as the gate material.

These materials are part of a class known as two-dimensional semiconductors — atomically thin sheets with exceptional electrical properties. Bismuth oxyselenide, in particular, offers something silicon struggles with at ultra-small sizes: speed.

Electrons move through it faster, even when packed into tiny spaces. It also has a higher dielectric constant, meaning it can hold and control electric charge more efficiently. That makes for faster switching, reduced energy loss, and — very importantly — a lower chance of overheating.

“This reduces electron scattering and current loss, allowing electrons to flow with almost no resistance, akin to water moving through a smooth pipe,” Peng explained.

The interface between these materials is also smoother than that of common semiconductor-oxide combinations used in industry today. That means fewer defects and less electrical noise.

All of this adds up to stunning results. According to the team, their transistor can run 40% faster than today’s most advanced 3-nanometer silicon chips — and it does so while using 10% less energy.

A shift born of necessity
There’s a geopolitical current flowing beneath this research.

Due to ongoing U.S.-led export restrictions, Chinese firms have been blocked from buying the latest silicon chip-making equipment. The most advanced lithography machines, those that can manufacture 3-nanometer chips, are made by a handful of companies in the West.

By creating a transistor that doesn’t rely on silicon — and which can be fabricated using existing tools in China — Peng’s team may have found a way around those sanctions.

“While this path is born out of necessity due to current sanctions, it also forces researchers to find solutions from fresh perspectives,” Peng said.

Despite the impressive performance in the lab, big questions remain.

Can these transistors be manufactured at scale? Will they survive the heat and stress of real-world computing? And how long will it take for the technology to reach consumer devices?

Peng’s team says they’re already working on scaling up production. Early prototypes of logic units built with the transistor showed ultra-low operating voltages and high voltage gain — two promising signs for integration into actual circuits. The fact that they used existing fabrication platforms also hints that the barrier to mass production may not be as high as with other experimental technologies.

“This work demonstrates that 2D GAAFETs do exhibit comparable performance and energy efficiency to commercial silicon-based transistors,” the researchers wrote, “making them a promising candidate for the next technology node.”

But turning laboratory breakthroughs into commercial chips typically takes years — sometimes decades. It’s one thing to design a single transistor. It’s quite another to integrate billions of them onto a reliable, manufacturable chip.

Still, if successful, this breakthrough could give China a new technological foundation. And more broadly, it signals that the semiconductor race may no longer be just about who can make smaller silicon but who can think beyond it.

Copying/scaling lab results from diamond chips are much more difficult because the West doesn't produce/refine graphite in the amounts China has and our tech for pressing artificial diamonds is less advanced than Chinese.

-Trump more than anything wants Disney/ABC to bend the knee, pay him off, AND start to propagate his worldview, and greatness across all platforms (and of course removing black and brown people from Pixar movies, etc.)

-Marvel JUST started shooting Avengers Doomsday in London which will have a 300+ M budget, and have to make over 500M to earn a profit.

-Trump announcing this right now is a way to get Bob Iger down to Mar A Lago to bend the knee to get a carve out, and to completely overhaul how Disney/ABC make content.
