You’re right. Unfortunately, you hold to same position as some of the biggest Alp haters on this forum. Call it being an innocent bystander, a casualty of the debate. You seem reasonable, and articulate your premise well. Some of the others are legitimately idiotic, or trolling.
Sorry, i'm posting from work so can't respond right away. Even if all 3 don't develop a 3-point shot, you make the trade every day of the week and twice on Sunday for a Top 5 player in the league. We know the discussion that happened with Harden and Paul and how there was only one ball, and we saw how that turned out. Maybe Harden/Paul is a false equivalency, but we've also seen our double big line-up as our best performing line-up by net rating. Sengun + Amen in any starting 5 has also been a super high net-rating. I have no doubt in my mind adding Giannis to that only makes you better. 3 point shooting from Sengun or Amen would just be icing on the cake Does trading for Giannis while keeping Sengun and Amen make you a championship contender? Absolutely. It depends on what other pieces you can keep, growth from Sengun and Amen, and what picks you can retain for future flexibility. But if i'm Stone, Milwaukee is the first team I call after the Draft Lottery placements are finalized this off-season.
If the Rockets acquire Giannis, they pretty much have to get rid of Sengun or Amen - not only just to make the trade feasible, but a lineup with Sengun, Giannis and Amen on the floor has 3 non shooters. That's a disaster. The Rockets are barely able to stay afloat with 2 non shooters in Thompson and Sengun - the "double big" lineups are a concession to the fact taht they don't have enough shooting - going all in on never being able to shoot seems like a really bad idea.
The second they start calling offensive fouls on Giannis his career is over. Trading him to Houston won’t work, the refs never like us
If you want to understand the "no" votes, try to envision the future in which we actually win a title. The poll is not "is Giannis way better than Sengun will ever be", that would be 99% yes. But imagine actually trading them, where do we go from there? Does he fit with Amen, or do we have to trade him to? Are we giving up our entire rebuild just for a short Giannis window? And how short is that window, he's reliant on athleticism, those careers don't typically go too well into the mid or late 30s. So are we giving this all up for a few years of Giannis? How good is the team we can put around him? He's hard to build around, takes very specific role players, can we get all those roleplayers before he starts to decline? Who else are we trading for if the goal is to win in the next 3 years? Also, look at the teams he had in Milwaukee for the past few years, those were first round exits. So if we want to win with him, we need teams SIGNIFICANTLY better than that, can we do that?
I appreciate that. I'll try to ease up on the Sengun talk. I just see him as more of a top 40 or 50 guy. If the right top-10 player came along, I'd make the move. But maybe Alperen proves me wrong. What I do see is top-10 potential in Amen Thompson. And with Ime at the helm, given his defensive mindset and no-nonsense approach, it feels like the foundation of a championship team. That's why I’m eager when a big opportunity comes up. Sometimes, you've got to take the swing.
Thinking Giannis would leave Milwaukee anytime soon would be like Jokic leaving Denver. Both have won their city rings and neither are going anywhere. Next!
All very reasonable, but I don’t think we get Giannis without including Sengun. If you get can get him with just Jalen and the picks I’d go for it, but I’m not including Jabari, Tari, or maybe even Dillon. You still have to fill out the roster competively and if Amen, Sengun, and Giannis is your core you are going to be in 2nd Apron in 2 years with no draft picks. So you have to hang on to your depth and be willing to go well into the lux tax. I wonder if our local godfather is willing to do that.
I think Alp is already top 25, all metrics support this. He has as much upside as anyone on the team, just a different type of prototype than Amen.
I feel like it wouldn't be a disaster just based on vibes and the talent they have. Sengun and Amen can both facilitate. Amen less so, but he has plenty of room to grow. Sengun is more than likely to develop a serviceable middie, and may trend to league average on 3's over time. You would really only need two other players that can shoot and space the floor at their level of talent. Depth is of course a consideration, and if worse comes to worst, you can always trade sengun, giannis, or amen for different pieces down the road that fit better together.
We can agree to disagree on not being able to get Giannis without Sengun. We have plenty of young talent that will be very attractive to Milwaukee in a rebuild scenario, and we have very valuable picks. The only team that can really compete with us is OKC if they include Chet or JW, and I don't think they will. If we're including all of the picks, Stone may be able to negotiate keeping one (or more) of Jabari, Tari, Cam, or Reed. Jabari in particular i'm hesitant to get rid of due to the shooting and spacing concerns you outlined. I'm coming around more to trading Sengun for Giannis if we can get Milwaukee to bite on Sengun + 2 FRP + Filler. I just don't think Milwaukee would want that trade package unless their GM is also high on Sengun. I think the luxury tax was going to be a concern for this young core anyway, so it's better to consolidate now. Better to trade pieces for a superstar than to let them walk in free agency for nothing. I used to be for getting Booker from Phoenix but he had a really bad year this year, so Giannis being (possibly?) available would be a blessing. If we don't get Giannis, it's not the end of the world though. We could always do a trade for a SG that performs consistently.
Both will leave if given a chance. They don’t care about where they live, they want to win. Giannis will def demand his trade this summer. I always thought Luka and Joker would team up. Give that a few years when bron retires.
Just for some perspective external to this space, The Athletic has this piece up. It's based on league chatter, discount accordingly, etc. The deal speculated would involve moving Sengun, Jalen, and Amen for Giannis and Gerami Grant.
No, all because you have the audacity to put Sengun in the same tier with Jalen, and doing it on your burner accouınt. Nobody is untouchable in the league. Not Sengun, not Amen, not SGA, not Luka. Nobody.
He's just one of those "Jalen stans, Alpi haters" who are too embarrassed to post from their main accounts. Do you actually think that it's not a burner? lol
Jerami Grant is on the Blazers and a proportionately larger piece to maneuver as well in a 3 or 4 team trade.... I doubt it ......but in a separate deal Jerami might be offered on a platter.
Every single data point we have from successful teams in the postseason over the last few years is based on having at least 3 but usually 4 and sometimes 5 players that you have to guard out to the line Boston - obviously, no need to even discuss Denver - the championship team was absolutely loaded with shooting, the closest thing to a backoff guy was Bruce Brown who was about 34% on modest volume Warriors - this is the ONE exception where they would occasionally play 2 non-shooters (Draymond, Looney etc) - they made up for this by having the 2 greatest shooters of all time on the floor in a motion-based offense that is hard to replicate Bucks - Giannis + 4 shooters at almost all times. Lakers - again, the formula here was LeBron + AD + shooters, maybe 1 non-shooter on the floor most of the time. I don't really think it needs to be explained that committing your futrue around 3 nonshooters is a disaster for spacing in a modern NBA offense - there's a probability I guess that it's so unorthodox that it actually works but, I'm highly doubtful of that.
I generally agree and it's the main reason i don't want giannis (plus i can't stand him and wouldn't want to root for him), but fit usually doesn't matter with stars. Wade was maybe the single worst "superstar" to pair with lebron (can't shoot, basically just a crappy version of james), and it worked great. CP and harden were not a good fit but worked out great. Talent typically overcomes fit.
I think you’re right on Giannis, but Jokic has no desire to leave Denver. He is said multiple times that basketball is just a job to him. He is definitely a guy that may retire to go back home before most guys. Denver is much more Europe like than anywhere else in the NBA. He’s a different guy than most of the NBA players.
