I saw them in Mass. about ten years ago. Eddie and wolfgang were solid but David isn't much of a singer anymore. I did get to see Kenny Wayne Sheppard open for them. He was incredible. Dude never gets much love.
They were my favorite band growing up (DLR was also a favorite). I never had a chance to see them when I was young. When I was older and could, I chose not based on what I was seeing online. (Although I regret that decision now.) Sometimes the old Dave seems to be there, like when he's doing "Ice Cream Man," but all too often his voice is just shrill. And then changing the lyrics to songs like "Panama" all the damn time... In fairness to him though, Wolfgang was a pretty lousy backup singer back then.
As @Ottomaton pointed out, is this question your personal GOAT or who you think should be the GOAT? If it is what the critics go with, it would probably be The Beatles but The Rolling Stones should be up there along with The Who and Led Zeppelin. Probably Pink Floyd too which would be my personal favorite along with what B-Bob said - Yo La Tengo! Too many others to mention from a personal standpoint but I would like to point out that even though he wasn't rock, don't underestimate the importance of Miles Davis. The guy influenced about 3 different genres of jazz and had his bands play rock and funk music.
Eh, people can debate who the greatest band of all time is until the cows come home. It's been done a million times and it's all subjective anyway, so what's the point? To me, it's more fun to find out who everyone's absolute #1 is. I think you can tell a lot about a person by who their favorite band/artist is. No ties, no honorable mentions, no dividing by genres, no "depends on my mood".....just 1 band. No exceptions! I think I started a thread like that years ago and it was interesting to see everyone's responses. A lot of surprises, IIRC.
i think theres a difference between GOAT and favorite. for example, i can acknowledge that jordan is the GOAT, but he isnt my favorite. hendrix is the GOAT, but he isnt my favorite. ringo is my favorite, but he isnt the GOAT. with that in mind i dont know how it can be anyone other than the beatles. the impact they had on, well, everything is massive. the song catalogue and how much they evolved musically in such a short time. 13 albums in 8 years. the creativity not just of the songs and music, but also arrangements and chord choices. innovative/rule breaking recording techniques, the impact on youth culture. they changed the game on multiple levels. its gotta be the beatles.
