Bruiser Brody was a nutcase in the ring. He was killed somewhere in Cuba I think after he was stabbed to death after or before a match by another wrestler (?).
The furthest I go back in wrestling is the mid-to-late 70's I think. I was watching that stuff as a 5-10 year old. Rocky Johnson (The Rock's dad) Killer Tim Brooks Tiger Conway Jr. Mil Mascaras Ox Baker (anybody remember the Heart Punch?) Pak Sung Nam (the martial arts chop that once fell an ox... lol) Black Claw Lansa (sp?) Red Bastine (sp?) Jose Lothario who discovered : Gino Hernandez Alberto Madril Superstar Billy Graham Abdullah the Butcher (runs a BBQ joint in Georgia now I think)
Puerto Rico, actually. Brody was a bit of a hero to his fellow wrestlers because he was one guy who would never take any sh*t from promoters. He wasn't shy about threatening promoters and bookers with violence if they refused to go along with his plans for a match. I believe the guy that killed him was a wrestler/promoter. If I'm not mistaken, Brody saw the large house drawn for the card that night and demanded more money to perform. This started a fight with the guy and when it was over, Brody had been stabbed to death in the showers, I believe. The other guy should have gone to jail, but this was back in the days when people still believed in the illusion of wrestling. Brody was a "bad guy" and the guy who killed him was booked as a huge hero, so everyone simply took it for granted that the evil guy got what was coming to him and the dude was acquitted.
Man, this is bringing back some vague memories for me. I was really young when I watched this, but I do remember the Mr. Norman commercials and a few other things. Wasn't there a tag team duo called the "Midnight Express?"
I caught the tail end of this since I was too young. I vaguely remember catching the sunday morning broadcast a few times when I was around 5-6 years old (1985-86ish). I would have killed for this to still be popular a few years later, because I was a wrestling fantatic from about ages 8-12. WCW was my association of choice back then,a nd I also enjoyed some federation that used to have shows on ESPN. I can't reember the name, but it came on every day after shcool and I remember the two big stars were Mick Foley and the 1-2-3 Kid, who I think became X-pac or whatever in the WWF?
hahaha! the little recital show!? little kids dressed up to dance while Don & Jeanna sat in the back watching them... I couldn't wait for that show to be over so I could watch wrestling...
That's when tv was still innocent, I remember watching that show. I turned on the tv this morning and at 6:15 there was a Girls Gone Wild infomercial on then. Hell, I remember on Sundays when I was a kid, at the Safeway, they had the toy aisle taped off because you couldn't buy toys or anything fun like beer on Sunday.
Its funny that yall bring the Blue Laws up. My mom was telling me about these this past weekend. I wanted to make Beef Stroganoff and I needed Cognac. I think the whole liquor ban on Sunday is bull****. So mom starts telling me about the Blue Laws. I dont remember this at all. When did these go away?
Don Mahoney, Jeanna Claire and their Kiddie Troupers or something right? I always watched that before going to church I think. They all had those cowbells.
Stan Lane and Bobby Eaton. I used to love the intro music as a kid. I believe they were later managed by Jim Cornett (of tennis racket fame). They warred vs. the Fantastics for a while.
I thought it was Dennis Condrey, or something like that. Bobby Eaton sounds right. The RnR Express - Rick Morton/Robert Gibson. The Fantastics - Tommy Fulton/Bobby Rogers (may have their first names mixed up). Then there was the Sheepherders and the Dirty White Boys. Who remembers the Von Erichs always entering to "Stranglehold"?
Yeah ..Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton were the original Midnight Express. Stane Lane took Dennis Condrey's place a few years later. Their scaffold matches were awesome.
First there was Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton Then "Sweet" Stan Lane replaced Condrey Later, Paul Heyman (known then as Paul E. Dangerously) managed a tag team called the Original Midnight Express of Dennis Condrey and Randy Rose. They feuded with the Midnight Express of Lane and Eaton managed by Jim Cornette through 1988, culminating at Starrcade '88. Any questions?
Johnny Valentine and Wild Bull Curry ruled. Anyone remember Ivan Putski? Mil Mascaras? The Spoilers? Killer Kowalski?
I remember all those guys except maybe Wild Bull Curry. Did he carry a bullwhip or something? Polish Power!
