Well that is the point - from the perspective of President Trump and many of his supporters, there is no "debate" and there are no real limitations on what he can and cannot do. He won the election, and accordingly he can do anything that he wants. Several posters have even articulated in good faith the idea that the Supreme Court should have no part in this discussion because they lack any military.

I am in general terms against tariffs, but I am open to strategic tariffs that are well thought out and have the best interest of the USA in mind. However that is not what is happening - there is no coherent plan and I believe that is on purpose because Trump and his supporters can mold the discussion into anything that is salient to their defense at that particular point in time.

I have lived long enough to know that my opinions or "truths" can sometimes be wrong - even if logically thought out. However, in this case I must confess for all the efforts to be open minded and to learn new information - it strongly feels like we are allowing a sociopath and his band of selfish opportunist to severely injure the US economy.

Maybe - I hope but I am not taking for granted that the midterms will punish Trump and his aligned candidates over his handling of the economy. Remember, this is a man that as a political candidate has been written of more than anyone in modern US history.

Whomever wins the next Presidential election is not likely going to want any part of contracting the disgusting expansion of executive powers and the weakening of the SCOTUS. If we are to assume the next President is a Democrat, they are going to be elected largely on undoing what Trump has done and pushing their own agenda - which will require relying on the expanded Executive powers - and they certainly are not going to want to give teeth to the right majority SCOTUS.

I think things will have to go really bad for us to see the type of change needed to reign in the executive branch - and that may be the next generation of Americans in politics.

What we have learned - is what we saw with Roosevelt and with Lincoln -- when someone takes office in either dire straits or has zero fear of consequence, they can take what is a slow and deliberate system and make it a very fast and checkless process.

@Nook, I know this much - there is no action or event that is in and of itself disqualifying for Trump. We learned that in the last election. J6, democracy, women’s rights to choose, and more.

As you’ve said, there are lots of independents who will vote based on their economic circumstances. If they deem those circumstances good enough or acceptable enough, it doesn’t really matter whether Trump is ignoring SCOTUS, detaining citizens, expanding presidential power, or whatever.

Agreed - the only thing that could disqualify him would be complete economic destruction possibly. What should be abundantly clear is that there are no disqualifiers for him when it comes to social liberties being restricted or gross criminal behavior. As long as that economy is humming, in the current climate a President can do just about anything he wants.

This morning, the adult at the Trump day care center, Scott Bessent. the Treasury Secretary,

told a closed-door investor summit, that "the tariff standoff with China is

unsustainable and that he expects the situation to de-escalate."

this reversal came after several days of Trump mouthing off about the firing of his hand-picked Fed Chairman.

    as a result,
    • the VIX (fear index) declined
    • the stock market rose ~~1.5%,
    • the bond yields fell slightly and
    • the dollar index gained

No. This is true for a Republican president, but not for a Democratic president. The mainstream media is severely distorted to provide false accountability for Democrats and little real accountability for Republicans. This was clearly demonstrated in the two years leading up to the last election when, in the midst of economic performance far outpacing other countries, the major US news media pushed out story after story alluding to a coming recession. At the same time, Trump's many scandals, including actual felony convictions, were treated as business as usual. This had a significant impact on the public's perception of the economy, Biden/Harris, and ultimately, the election.

I feel that social media algorithms can easily sway a person more then they could have ever before. The Republicans with the backing of the billionaire class and hostile foreign governments have pushed propaganda so hard that some folks can't tell right from wrong and good from evil as evident within this subforum. Gone are the old days of verified sources and legitimate news. The Dems better figure their messaging problem out quick, unify, and start doing something or the great experiment will be over.

Republicans are good at lying and getting gullible folks to buy into it.

Dems put out hokey cringe uploads, and gullible folks buy into it.

I do not see a marginal difference between the two.
I also do not think as many folks get swayed by social media as some think.
I think many are brought up in homes that lean one way or another and they seek out their own kind within social media. Facebook excluded, because all that site is good for is wishing folks you don't care all that much about Happy Birthdays all the time.

Agreed, I NEVER thought people would vote for him, but they did, and I think it goes to ONE major issue which is the economy, people were not happy about prices and IMO you had a swath of voters holding their nose and voting for trump. He will never lose maga, he could literally shoot someone on 5th Ave and he WOULD get away with it. But I think the fringe voters are sweating about now thinking about the tariffs and how it will affect them...............a strong economy does wonders for our memories. IMO he is going to blink just prior to the 90 days and will announce some kind of win..........but with this administration who has no clue so how should we know.

maga folks are willing to go down with trump because if they don't, they will have to admit they were wrong and just like the orange man he simply cannot do that.

Things like this just have me shake my head at what lengths they will go to capitulate

The battle is for the fringe every election. Trump has been pimping the immigration "problem" since he began running in 2015..

It plays on a lot of levels

and yesterday, after several days of the 78-yr old trust fund baby calling for the firing of his hand-pick Fed Chair,
the US dollar fell to the lowest level since early 2022

Looks like Trump is signalling he wants to roll back the China trade war.

He better hope China rolls back some of those resource restrictions crucial for making semis and robotics.
