Since you pointed me towards a few books, I thought I might return the favor. I just got my hands on a book by Robin Lane Fox (an Oxford scholar), entitled The Unauthorized Version: Truth and Fiction in the Bible. I have read nothing, but I know it was very well received in academia and is supposedly very insightful. Enjoy.
