Cam is gonna be alright. Even with his struggles he's never looked out if his depth. Given his gross lack of professional experience that in itself is an accomplishment.
I agree - you can tell he is a big leaguer and he is just going to keep getting better as long as he stays healthy. Does he tap out as a solid starter, all star or more? I don’t know - but he has some loud skills outside of just crushing the ball. His arm is very good, he is very fast as well. I think he has a chance to be a Gold Glove right fielder.
I think he could be a more disciplined Correa. Same build and power but more balanced and deliberate at the plate. He's never going to bring the defensive value of Correa though.
I was just going to post something similar. It would be very Dusty like. and he's already done it earlier in the year. For the life of me I don't know where the idea of sitting the hot hand comes from.
I will be furious if he does that and so should Brown. It sounds silly, but he should be fired immediately if he does that. It would prove he has no clue on how to run a baseball team.
I have been pleasantly surprised with just how good Cam has been defensively in RF. You can tell he’s really put the work in to get good reads and solid jumps off the bat. His athleticism pretty much takes care of the rest. Once he gets more comfortable going back the wall he’s going to be elite defensively. I’d almost go as far as to say some of the late inning defensive replacements are a little unnecessary, imo. Cam can get to balls (specifically in the gap or in foul territory) that probably only one other player on this roster can get to: Meyers.
I’m not saying Joe doesn’t deserve any blame, but I find it pretty dumb that fans constantly slam him for “sitting the hot hand” after a big game. Like sitting Yordan in STL after hitting a HR the day before. 1. We have no idea when that decision was made. Could’ve been made before he even hit that HR, and as a coach you’re not going to just walk back those decisions, especially if players have already been notified, because of a players performance in one game. This was how Dusty handled it. 2. We have no idea what injuries or bumps and bruises these guys are dealing with. Do you want them healthy playing every game in April or every game in September and October when they matter the most? There’s so much behind the scenes that we will never see that influences these decisions. Modern sports medicine is so available to all these teams today that I have no doubt Joe is making these decisions in conjunction with the FO. I would be shocked if a team with as forward thinking a FO as the Astros doesn’t have some FO influence in start/sit decisions throughout the season. The amount of advanced sports medicine science available is incredible. Bottom line, some of yall are getting way too worked up about guys sitting for a day in APRIL when we have no knowledge of what’s going on behind the scenes.
I'm optimistic, but I've seen too many flash in the pan starts fizzle out to curse him with superstardom just yet.
1. is a no go for me. Adjust plans if the situation allows. 2. is always true, but not always the reason for decisions. Sometimes it's just stubbornness,
Cam Smith is unquestionably a better right fielder defensively than chas. Why in the world is chas being brought in for defense late? If anything can should be brought in for Chas and his pea shooter arm late in those situations.
