Human capital has arguably been the greatest driver of U.S. success. China and India are catching up fast, and that's fine - more global success is good as long as it drives progress for humankind.

But here at home, we should be attracting talent, not driving it away.

For every 2 guys that get a PhD, three women earn the degree. That percentage has been going up for a couple of decades and is expected to widen in the coming years.

If my daughter's high school/college friend group is any indication, an exodus started with the Roe reversal and accelerated greatly after November. More than half of her 12 friends are getting grad degrees or jobs in Europe and plan on staying there. Others are researching grandparents to see if they can apply for citizenship in other countries just in case they feel the need to leave. In other words, it's on the mind of every one of them. Again, this is anecdotal, but I suspect it is greater and more widespread than that.

Smart young people, especially women, will leave red states for blue and leave the US for other places. I don't think we have any idea what kind of social change this will create, but it will not be good. Already, France and Canada are making overtures for US faculty to move and some will do that soon while others will wait a bit, but given everything, it will happen.

And of course, money and innovation follow brains. It took us the better part of a century to build an educational and R&D operation that is the envy of the world and the best in history, yet only a bad SC decision and two months of this administration to obliterate it without any understanding of what comes next or what might break because of it.

Nearly 300 scientists apply for French academic program amid Trump cuts in U.S.

Amid Trump cuts, nearly 300 U.S.-based scientists seek French program : NPR

A French university courting U.S.-based academics said it has already received nearly 300 applications for researchers seeking "refugee status" amid President Trump's elimination of funding for several scientific programs.

Aix-Marseille is not the only European institution hoping to capitalize on America's brain drain.

Last month, France's CentraleSupélec announced a $3.2 million grant to help finance American research that had been halted in the states. And Netherlands Minister of Education, Culture and Science Eppo Bruins wrote in a letter to parliament that he requested to set up a fund aimed at bringing top international scientists to the Netherlands.

My daughter is getting her degree in bio-chemistry. Lab work during college is an integral part of getting this degree so she was hoping to land one of those jobs at the school. Those jobs are no longer available, not because they were filled, but because they no longer exist due to DOGE funding cuts. She says she's definitely leaving the state at some point, but she hasn't given up on the country yet.

Absolutely true. My kids attended the top private school in Houston. For the six years of data that I have, the women outperformed the men by two key public datapoints: (1) of the kids who graduated c*m laude (the top 20% of the class), 2/3rd were women, and (2) women outperformed men in the quality of college they matriculated to. They are all very aware of the abortion and women’s rights policies of each state and are openly discussing the possibility of living in other countries. I would expect that these things are true across all high schools in the Houston area.

How does this make the country great? The biggest advantage the US had over the rest of the world was its ability to attract top talent from the rest of the world, the beginning of the end.

I don't know what will happen when Joe Blow Americans discover how cheap it is to get a world class education in China. Cheaper than Europe.

Maybe they'll blame Harvard for price gouging and burn it down.

More and more Chinese universities are joining the world top 200 universities rank each year, more international talent will flow to China in the next decade. I will bet Trump will MCGA.

Its amazing how hard GenX'ers and Millennial parents/teachers are fighting progress such as LLMs. I would have loved to have a tutor to explain a solution multiple ways if I didn't understand it the first time. I struggle with geometry to this day as one of the worst teachers in the school so happened to be my geometry teacher.

Khan academy is slowly making inroads for creating a teaching assistant. When I talk about agency, local or free LLMs would be the first step towards providing access to kids. Volunteering at the library with their blessing would be impact most people here would be able to contribute to.

Of course people would have to learn its limitations and not be suckered in by hallucinations or one shot moon requests, which might be a standard higher than the teachers who taught them

    Universities are evil. Demonize education.

Spam YouTube videos (many of which are financed by billionaires) to talk about games and movies using different races than what is historically accurate.

DO NOT ever read a book. Keep spamming twitter and YouTube posts.

    Eat up the propaganda.

    Change the world.

To be fair to your teacher, you struggle with critical thinking in general.

Hasnt this been true for decades even, girls outperforming guys in education all levels? Its gotta feel a bit frustrating that the "get good grades / get good job" approach hasnt benefitted them as much

They don't want the US to be good at science and STEM. They see the nerds as bad.

They want the whole country to be like Appalachian. Poor hicks but all white. That's their utopia.
