Trump told her to commit crimes. What is an officer of the court to do? It is a real conundrum.

 

After 9/11 innocent Muslims and Middle Easterns were the target of racial profiling.

Now everybody will get the opportunity to experience it

 

Anti-Blackness is up and running strong yet again. The thing is when you have a broad "the other" appearance you experience it based on someone's preconceptions of you.

 

The goal is to change the stats. Address the underlying problem. People are not going to stop being apprehensive of high-crime demographics (age, socioeconomic status, race) when they see patterns over and over in their lives. Take accountability. Own up to the problem in a mature manner. Address the root cause. Drive positive change. THIS can uplift people.

And that's where my policy recommendations come in. 1) promoting 2-parent households; 2) providing economic opportunity for all; and 3) increasing religion in the lives of people.

It's clear that change has not occurred from brow beating people and just saying -- don't be racist! That's so superficial and of course won't work. It's glossing over the problem and sweeping some major issues under the rug. Root causes must be addressed and changes implemented.

Agree with this but would change 3 to Morality. Being religious is not a substitute for being a good person. Some of the most superficially religious people I know are absolutely trash human beings to others.

 

It’s a conversation for a different thread but a couple points on this:

-There was a well funded social media campaign from the right and foreign actors to persuade people on the left, young people, and especially Arab Americans to take out their anger over Palestine on Biden/Kamala and the case was made that Trump would victimize the Muslim world in a way that was more obvious and wake people up to where change could happen.

-That worked in some cases such as Dearborn. In other cases more broadly it’s unclear if this single issue moved people to vote for Trump or stay home or it was other issues such as egg prices etc.

-There are plenty of and I would even go as far as to say most “leftists” who were and are pragmatic enough to vote in their best interest and not be co-opted as easy as people in Dearborn bubble.

-Using the term “Leftists” is painting with too broad of a brush. The pro Democratic coalition could all be labeled as Leftist but there’s a big difference between a Dearborn Muslim activist vs an oldschool Bernie voter from Vermont vs a 21 year old student at UT vs a never Trumper former Republican, etc etc.


Unfortunately you can’t say the same thing for the right anymore other than to maybe distinguish the ultra wealthy from the ultra Christian nationalist vs the uneducated bigot vs the crypto bro incel grifter. Either way the “Right” is much less segmented and diverse that “Lefists”.

We shouldn’t point fingers at such a broad target and blame all of “them” for what Trump is doing to destroy the country right now. Doing that and fighting each other is exactly what makes MAGA activists happier than anything. Uniting under common ground for the next few years is what they do NOT want because they know if the coalition is united under the cause of rooting out MAGA, and excited enough to get off their butts, they will lose spectacularly all of their power.

 

I agree with this and I am fine with your proposed change (not my best case scenario, but acceptable).

I'm looking for a strong moral code and also a long term purpose. If people have both, or even one, of these things, then they are FAR less likely to commit crimes. At the end of the day, that's what we are after -- giving people educational + economic opportunities, role models (father figures in particular), a playbook for morality, and a long term purpose. The challenge in the black community today is that many kids have NONE of these things. We must address it.

Profiling people that may or may not be illegal has been a problem for decades. Remember Arizona SB 1070? Some of the provisions were struck, but SCOTUS actually upheld (in 2012, when Obama was President) that state law enforcement could lawfully stop and detain people suspected of being illegal, and require confirmation of legal status.

I am not suggesting that this isn't a problem, but it's not a NEW problem that just started rearing its head with DJT in power.

That same SCOTUS opinion reaffirmed that immigration policy is solely within the purview of the Federal Gov't, which is what is happening now, and why ICE is pre-empting the state courts in this situation. So while libs are quick to shout "no due process!!" in reality this is following long-standing procedures and interplay between state and federal government.
