Reed is the heir apparent for the PG spot and its the hardest position to play on the floor. You cant play a rookie in any capacity in that spot on a winning team. Rim running center is the easiest position on the floor (Derrick Lively) and the teams biggest need. If we did shore up PG....it wouldn't be through the draft.
Nets wouldn’t have tanked without our trade. In that scenario, Nets’ 2025 pick would be probably worse than our 9-10th pick
...so we don't have good younger players now? We have done incredibly well in the draft... once we had some patience. No one turned out to be Anthony Bennett, Hasheem Thabeet, or Kevin Knox.
You guys are nuts. Amen and Jalen is our starting backcourt next year. If we re-sign FVV, Cam and Reed will be fighting for backup minutes at guard. All this might change depending on playoff outcomes and trade targets, but the most likely outcome for next year is a rotation something like this: Amen, Jalen, Brooks, Jabari, Sengun FVV, Reed, Tari, Adams back part of bench: Cam, 9th pick (most likely a big), vet journeymen,
if we owned the pick, they wouldn't have tanked down to a 6th seed. They probably would have been better than Phoenix this year so what your saying is completely wrong.
Somehow this continues to be stated despite all the explanations at the beginning of the year. You can argue that we could have gotten more from Brooklyn because they were desperate to make that deal with the Knicks (and maybe had the Knicks pressuring Brooklyn to throw in one more asset), but absolutely they made it clear they're not tanking without giving them their picks back. Then with every effort to tank the best they could do was 6th worse? The east is SO bad.
The only guaranteed starters next year are Sengun and Amen. Reed is far away and probably won't be ready but hes being groomed to be the starting PG. As far as guarantees go its probably: Untradable: Amen Basically untradable but will listen : Sengun Better be getting something back good: Reed, Jabari No need to upgrade but wouldn't mind: Tari, Jalen Get him off the team: Cam
If we traded back into the 20’s Fleming would be a great pick. The 20’s is where the value is in this draft. We don’t need another wing, but Carter Bryant is another solid 20’s trade back candidate. I continue to hope we trade the pick if it’s not top 4. Outside the top 4 the only guy I really like is Kon. Fears and Queen have huge upside, but probably not worthy of high lotto in another draft.
I think it’s very arguable about Reed being groomed to be the “STARTING” pg. It’s even debatable on whether he is being groomed to be a point guard on offense period. So far he has looked like a good combo guard destined for a bench role, if he stays on the Rockets. As long as Jalen is on this team, I don’t see a starting role for Reed. He will have to primarily guard point guards when he is in the game, but his offensive role will be determined by whom he is playing with. For that matter, Amen will not necessarily be the “PG” on offense all the time. We are going to be a 3 headed monster when it comes to initiating the offense, maybe even 4 headed if we luck out in the lottery.
I don’t think you can have too many young wings. We can’t pay everybody so having guys in the pipeline is a good idea. Positionless basketball is real in the NBA and 3&D wings are always going to be in high demand because of their versatility.
Perpetual loop of either hyping up or shetting on prospects, it will happen next year and the years ahead.
I could have said that 7 or 10 years ago, decent wings are worth more than guards....unless those are elite guards that are triple dub machines.
Yes and judging from what Stone has done (and in some cases not done), I think he agrees. He believes in athletes and will worry about fit later.
I agree that Reed is a long way from starting pg. The org may just take the approach of seeing who develops (Reed or Amen) best at that position. Reed is going to have to take a pretty substantial leap to be considered the air apparent to anything. The rockets will probably need a bridge. I’m really down on Fred right now so it’s hard for me to be objective. I could maybe stomach one more year (not at his current salary), but he’s gonna want more of a commitment. Frankly I think the pg position is the one position we can afford to go out and get an old guy; a guy not on our timeline. This assumes Reed or Amen develop well enough to take over. I keep thinking 2-yrs of James Harden would be a lot better than 2 more yrs of Fred. Dude averaged 23pts and 9 dimes this yr, mostly without Kwahi. We know he can shoot it. It might be attractive for Harden to retire a rocket. Hand the reigns off to Reed or Amen. Plus we can conserve our assets.
I”m with you on Fred. I prefer he not be on the team next year. I don’t really want Harden either. This team finally got its superstar and his most impactful position is PG. Every move we make this off-season should keep in mind we are building around Amen, Jalen, and Sengun. Signing FVV is antonymic to that philosophy (mainly because I don’t trust Ime to move FVV to the bench).
If two teams leap frog the sixers, they lose their protection and the pick goes to OKC. Not ideal for us.
I'm not so sure about this. You can argue that Jalen, Jabari, and Amen were all perceived BPAs, but Reed over Castle was clearly more of a skillset fit over athleticism pick. And his later picks has been a mixed bag of skillsets vs. raw athleticism. Also, this is probably the first draft that he will have to make the tradeoff between high-floor helpful guy next year vs. raw athletic developing talent that may take a while. Say if Knueppel and Malauch are both on the board when the Rockets pick, I personally think he picks Knueppel in that scenario.
This matches what I am thinking. I have a bad feeling Rockets will pick between Bari and Tari and depending on the price, Brooks might be too costly to keep with Amen likely getting the max. Just something on my mind
