Bob Kemp does a local show in Arizona now. why dont you like him? I loved him. He's real sports talk radio. One of the smarter sports radio minds out there. He did bash Houston teams a lot. which was appropriate at the time because when he was on 610, Houston teams either stunk or blew it in the playoffs.
Kemp is one of the rudest, most patronizing guys to ever get a sports radio show. But he did know his stuff, and I used to listen to him all the time. It was always a love/hate relationship with him. Loved his analysis, but just hated his acerbic tone. I feel the same way about Charley Rosen.
I used to listen to Kemp in college about 8 years ago. I HATED HIM because of his condescending attitude. Everytime I got up in arms about his snootiness, I would call show and try to get on the air in order to defend some of the people he shot down... unfortunately I didn't have the patience to wait on hold for 3 hours at 1am!!! Kemp will go down, one day!
How much are you listening Sunday afternoons? Come on? I don't like it either but it is popular and profitable and a deluge of money on weekends is a good thing. And it is money that doesn;t come from a home improvement show. And it get us cross-promoted on 100.3. It's a win and it's da bomb.
Funny, because I mentioned the gaming show idea in a late night shift on Sundays to one of our mutual friends at the station. Actually, I think after the Texans coverage, 610 should devote Sundays to all the stuff you don't hear about all week.
Why can't we get a sports/news station on the FM dial? My MP3 player and cell phone both have built in radios but can't play AM stations. My car radio plays AM but the reception goes out under bridges and in tunnels or parking garages.
I used to like the Sporting News Network also. ESPN is in overkill mode right now. It would be nice to have an alternative, but I don't know if they could compete with the local talk show hosts.
Bob Kemp had an obvious disdain for all things Houston. F that guy. There are plenty of cities that had crap teams at that time, or choked in the playoffs - for some reason he picked on Houston almost nightly. F that useless turd.
when i went to one of the games last year i tried to listen to 610 on my walkman but couldn't pick up any reception inside Toyota Center. I never tried it at The Summit but I thought it was possible to listen to the games in that building?
I remember them not putting in some kind of antenea at the compaq center til something like it's final year in there. I don't know if TC has one in there or however that works.
some of you guys are too sensitive. It just seems that some here cannot handle criticism of our own if delivered in a rude or snotty way. who cares how he delivers his criticism if he is right most of the time. (and he is.) He picks on other teams as well, such as the STL Rams. He doesn't like Steve Nash and criticized the Suns for signing him, (keep in mind I heard this on his Arizona show) I love all Houston teams and agreed with what Kemp said about them. You can't deny that he is probably the smartest guy on the radio. He does not hate Houston. Blame the teams and players that make up the Houston sports scene and their decisions. He said Francis was a selfish player. We learned he was right. He said Dierker was a terrible post-season manager, pretty much dead on again. Kemp isn't on national radio anymore, but I have listened to his show in AZ (because I joined a fan club of Kemp). So I got to hear his opinions on Garner, and guess what, Kemp has never been a fan of Garner either and ripped him for some of his post-season decisions this year as well (calling them Dierker-esque).....and many here have ripped Garner as well. useless turd Rocket G? I guarantee you would be a smarter person sportswise if you listened to him. The guy is a tireless researcher and evaluator and a bundle of information.
I heard something like this not long ago. 610 has long wanted to go to more local programming and get away from the national stuff. They now have the on-air talent to do it. Ultimately, 610 still runs the show because it has the Rockets and the Texans and because they have the best local sports folk. I like Matt Thomas and guys like Tom Franklin are ok. Robert Henslee is a friend of a friend and a great guy. But, ultimately, Zerlein, Granato, Vandermeer, Palillo, Lord and Dalati are the best sports voices in town. Because they are so good and have both the Texans and Rockets, they also get the better guests. CC has a ton of pull and they'll do everything to kick KILT's ass, but they won't get the Texans and they seriously burned their bridges with the Rockets, who won't go back. They were very close to losing the Astros as well. Bottom line, if you put their station managers in a steel cage and had them duke it out (Ken Charles for KTRH and Laura Morris for KILT), my money is on Morris every day of the week and twice on Sunday's. I'd never want to work for her, but she is a ball buster when it comes to radio.
My .02 cents. I cannot stand Justice. He drops more names than a wannabe Hollywood producer at a pitch meeting. What is really frustrating is that he so often gets caught talking out of his ass. He says stuff as if he knows it is true and it turns out to be total and utter crapola. By the way, Chance, heard you say on the morning show last week that while you were disappointed about the Astros, you weren't THAT disappointed because of the Rockets. Nicely done.
It was true, too. I love the Astros and will miss this season but they gave us much more than we expected. The Rockets are primed and ready!
Matt Thomas is gone. He left Rice and KTRH, and is the voice of the Utah Utes. It will be interesting to see exactly who does Sportstalk, and how frequently. Tom Franklin, Carl Dukes, Henslee, and Ted DeLuca are barely enough to keep one show going regularly. My guess is that one (or possibly two) of Kenny Hand, Russ Small, and Craig Roberts (assuming he wanted to return to broadcasting full-time) will be tapped. Given that Sportsradio610's ratings aren't all that great in and of themselves (http://insideradio.com/ratings.asp?lookup=33, #22 in the market Summer 2004), this move is kind of bizarre. Perhaps they are trying to get Infinity to sell leave the AM dial in Houston completely? Then again, this is Clear Channel (aka "Cheap Channel"), so the goal may just be happy to run as much national programming as possible, and hope it will pull the ratings up a bit.
Chance, I'm looking at your site, and I look at the contact info, and stuff. Nice site and all. I see the address is at so and so Jersey Drive. Didn't think much of it, til I see the zip code 77040. Then the lightbulb went off. That address is in JV. You got an office in JV? I map it up, and those are some residental places. I pass by that street all the time. I know I've passed that house for atleast four straight years of my life. Dierk lives in that neighborhood.
