I may be extremely ignorant right now, but why does the President have the sole authority to impose or remove tariffs.

    Economic 101.

    No.

Do you like Trump so much that you don't think for yourself anymore? What credibility do you have? See how that looks? I don't appreciate your constant personal attacks on me instead of addressing the points.

It's crazy that one crazy F'er can tank the global economy. That is too much power. Our allies and trading partners will never trust us again. This will eventually bleed to countries choosing other reserve currencies to diversify. We will probably never completely recover from this.

In response to the recently imposed 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and parts by the Trump administration, Stellantis NV has announced temporary layoffs affecting approximately 900 workers across several U.S. facilities. The affected plants include powertrain and stamping facilities in Michigan and Indiana.

Concurrently, Stellantis is idling production at its assembly plants in Windsor, Canada, and Toluca, Mexico. The Windsor Assembly Plant, responsible for manufacturing the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and Dodge Charger Daytona, will halt operations for two weeks starting April 7.

These measures are part of Stellantis' strategy to navigate the economic impact of the new tariffs. But, as a result, Americans are already losing their jobs, even if temporarily.

A new memo circulated within the company highlights the concerns of the tariffs imposed by the Trump Administration:

I'm not an expert on tariffs. I don't pretend to be one like you on the internet and predicate my opinion based on who is imposing the policy.

You hate Trump. You hate anything he does. If Trump said the sky was blue you would disagree.

I don't know the tariffs are good or claim to they are. I know other countries impose tariffs/manipulate currency/impose non-tariff trade barriers/steal U.S. IP/engage in unfair trade practices.

What are appropriate responses to those? Maybe it's to impose tariffs. Maybe it's not.

Has the U.S. been getting screwed by other governments? Maybe.

Experts will disagree. Political figures will disagree.

The Constitution grants Congress this power. However, in the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and the Trade Act of 1974, Congress delegated some tariff authority to the executive branch. The executive is limited in its tariff authority but can impose tariffs in specific cases -- national security threats or significant trade imbalances.

Congress has the ability to reclaim tariff authority through new legislation, though this is unlikely (to overcome a Presidental veto).

The key word was 'this forum'.

[quoteWhere is the money going? You mean the money stolen from the American people because they will be paying more for goods and services? That money will largely be off set with the massive Trump tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.[/quote]

You don't know where the money is going.
The ultra wealthy never pay taxes in the first place. How can you go lower than 0?

It might be a bad idea. The premise behind it is not a bad idea.
We have talked about this for well over 2 decades - we have outsourced way too much and gutted the middle class. Door dashing and uber while begging for tips is not a way to live. Service economy wages does not support middle class upward mobility.

We all can't be software engineers and being a doctor or lawyer is just lame. We need good paying jobs that doesn't require a very high IQ.

The problem is that Trump does what he wants, because in his warped mind he believes he is smarter than experts, whether it's business, science, education, medicine and healthcare, or the environment and climate change.

Unfortunately, the only expertise he has is the art of the grift, and avoiding prison when he breaks the laws.

Based on his history, Trump is more likely to tell me that the sky is green and nobody has ever seen such a verdant shade of it before.

It is fine if you don't know. Being open-minded is a good thing. I provide information and my opinions, and your primary response is "I hate him." Once again, I don’t appreciate the personal attack. I do not hate anyone. One thing I have been accused of or criticized for is trying too hard to understand other people's perspectives. Some may call it naive or foolish or say I’m being taken advantage of, but that’s okay because I know who I am. I grew up in a family that valued non-hate, and that is a core principle for me. Yes, there are times when I am really upset because I see the harm and cruelty, but I do not carry hate in my heart. It's just not something I like.

BTW, psychology has shown that holding onto hate is a heavy burden that harms the person carrying it. So I think I am on the right track for myself.

Funny, but you can tell it's fake because Wakanda is way too low and Mordor is on the list at all.

I'm not a constitutional law scholar but I always wondered if it was even constitutional to give that power away. Taxation is explicitly defined as an authority of Congress and I dont see how they can just delegate a portion of that power away to another branch. Existing delegation of authority generally happens under the premise that the executive is implementing a law and Congress has given discretion to the executive on the nuances and detail of that implementation.

But to delegate taxing authority to the President seems totally different and I'm not convinced that Congress has the constitutional basis to delegate a portion of its taxing authority to the executive branch.

That is the problem - the experts really are not disagreeing on this issue. The over whelming majority of experts on this topic are against Trump's tariffs.

As far as their own political agendas - a majority of traditionally Republican economists are against the tariffs.

That is why this is more concerning for me than other toss up issues.
