It does make sense, n I've just looked it up. Russia is already under sanctions so therefore not on the list, same goes for North Korea. If he drops the sanctions; they'll be added to the list.

That's what the Press Secretary said. But there is an inconsistency.

Despite the sanctions, there remains a trade imbalance of about $3.5B with Russia in 2024. Kosovo has a trade imbalance of only around $5.7 million while still facing the baseline 10% tariff. Zimbabwe has an imbalance of only around $24 million and has been under U.S. sanctions for years due to human rights abuses, yet it faces a 35% tariff.

The problem is in part credibility - even the chart that the President used at his press conference is inaccurate concerning the reciprocal tariffs. It even took economists awhile to figure out how he got the numbers he did. So, there is that issue. When the numbers are inaccurate, and that is supposedly the basis for the tariff rates, that means that the President is either incompetent or is a liar. Neither is a positive, in this case I refuse to believe that the people around him, helping him with these matters are stupid - so that means that he is a liar, and believes that the American people are stupid.

Second- it goes beyond the numbers being false, and hence his tariffs being inaccurate and hence not being really reciprocal tariffs (although that is a neat way for him to try to justify them). Second, he negotiated the trade agreements with Mexico and Canada only a handful of years ago - and now wants to break it.

I hope that this bring massive prosperity to the USA - but I am very dubious and concerned. I have a master's in economics, but I am not an expert. I defer to the experts and the overwhelming sentiment across political lines is that this is not a good idea. If I need a kidney replacement, I am going to listen to doctors - and not someone that isn't an expert. It takes a special type of entitlement to believe that one consistently knows better than those that have spent their lives studying and working in a field.

I will give Trump credit for sticking his neck out though - is this is a massive success or failure, everyone will know it is because of the policies of this administration. If it fails Trump will attempt to blame someone, that is his standard operating procedure - but this is so bold that it will not matter. Sink or swim, this is his baby.

This is funny - and the overwhelming majority of economists that think this is a fool's errand, they are not more qualified than Trump, Musk and Lutnick? All of the businesspeople that came out against tariffs - they don't know what they are doing?

Where is the money going? You mean the money stolen from the American people because they will be paying more for goods and services? That money will largely be off set with the massive Trump tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.

I am for it - if it works, but when the overwhelming majority of experts say this is a bad idea - It is probably a bad idea.... but we will find out.

If there is a recession (and I don't know if there will or will not be one), Trump can and would blame Biden or other nations or some other boogie man - but it will not matter because he has wed himself to these tariffs, and no amount of blame will take that stink off of him if the economy fails. He doesn't have 60%-65% of the support of the American people, he had like 48% of the vote, and about 50% of the American people - so any economic issues and he is likely toast.

There is a real chance that there is a depression - but until it happens, I am not going to act as if it is certain or already has happened.

There are people( and more of them) with PHD's and more in Economics that know more than us who said this is a bad idea

There is a simpler way to look at things:

Did I like what he did ? or
Did he do what I liked ? or
I don't understand all this but I trust him in general
    (vice versa true as well)

if this is any indication, it is less than 50%

Four Senate Republicans join with Democrats to rebuke
Trump "National Sales Tax" policy in key vote

Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska plus Rand Paul and Moscow Mitch of Kentucky join the Dems to rebuke Trump's ill-conceived tariffs.

Rand Paul predicts Trump tariffs will lead to 'political decimation,'
says Republicans will lose both the House and Senate

He added, “Our Constitution was very specific that taxes — tariffs are a tax — taxes originate in the House, come to the Senate and then go the president,”
“They don’t just go to the president and no one else. What kind of system would it be if all of our taxes and laws were passed by one person?”

Trump places tarrifs on islands that have no human inhabitants, only penguins.

It's about time those f***ing penguins paid their fair share! F***ing freeloaders!

    What a clown show.

The crazy thing is we were already seeing a manufacturing boom happen under biden due to IRA/Chips act. Trump could've just claimed all the new manufacturing that was opening was due to him and do nothing to the economy. The fed was already predicting 4 rate cuts this year before Trump got into office.

Hes destroying the economy for literally no reason. He could've just kept the Biden economy going and take credit for everything good and his low iq supporters wouldn't have known @El_Conquistador

Susan Collins losing her race next year will be so satisfying. She's so useless

Most people are not experts but are happy to base their opinions or beliefs depending on their political agenda.

I am not an expert either. I know the EU and other countries impose tariffs on the United States. I don't know what is or isn't appropriate for the United States to do in kind.

"Experts" disagree all the time. In most every trial in this country you can find two "experts" testifying to opposite conclusions on a subject.

"Experts" have their own political biases and agendas as well.

I will hear what they have to say but they aren't some neutral oracles of truth.

What is your basis for this claim?

You don't like Trump so anything he does is bad and disastrous. What credibility do you have?
