I like it. push the boundaries of mobility for your big guys . I doubt we test it vs teams with good perimeter scorers in the playoffs , but long term you need to look at sengun with another big. Steven Adams is also increasing his value by showing he can still be productive here. If you asked most commenters , most would have believed that if Adams came back then it would be as even more of a stiff and playable until "cant play Kanter" . However, that was dumb. He's always been a great athlete. The guy looks amazing for us. Time off has helped rest him up . He looks lean and intimidating. Underrated smart game too , was known for pestering guys as a rookie . Can jabari and Alpi both pick up on some of the things hes doing.
true story- I found out a few years ago that Mario and I have a...contact....in common. not that I would have before, but I will certainly not forget him.
Yeah, I get it...but it's not like nba.com is showing any "on this day in history" or "throwback" clips of Elie for anything else except the moment of the Kiss of Death. Personally I was a huge Otis Thorpe fan back in that era and you never hear anyone talk about him anymore except when there is the occasional video of some Akeem pass out of a double to an OT dunk.
Yep. He also hit a game winner against us that nba media used to replay a lot. That Pippen season was a curse.
I'm liking the double bigs so much I don't want it to end. Is Maluach the answer? Who else could we look forward to cause I can't imagine any universe where we can afford to keep Adams. Rober Williams III? Who should we be watching?
There's a few others in this draft. You keep Adams around as a backup and to teach the youngsters how to bang in the NBA
I feel like we drastically underestimate how good Steven Adams is in this "double big" lineup. You can't just replace him with any other big guy - you need a big who can do the same type of dirty work Adams does like boxing out consistently, setting hard screens, etc. You gotta want to get physical to do that and a lot of younger guys aren't really into that type of physicality.
Thought about that yesterday or the last B2B, Sengun Landale is not seeing the court as often. Tried asking chatgpt about it, seems it does not have access to data bases or something liket that. Cant understand how the AI cant deal with that but its going to take over our jobs.
Yep. The Rockets are getting 50% of the boards on the offensive glass. This kills the opponents transition offense and gets easy baskets for the Rockets. Adams is the key to that offensive rebounding rate. So far, no team has torched the Rockets in the half court when the double bigs are in to counter giving up so many boards.
For the purpose of the stat, it's defined by the NBA, not by me. I believe it's from the restricted area up to the 3 point line.
The double bigs work because we are playing zone so the big guys don't have to chase anyone on the perimeter. As you said, it likely wouldn't work well against a good shooting team. Still good to have in the bag for the right opponents.
Yeah, it feels like you never see a Zone in the playoffs - those teams generally are too good at shooting for that. On the other hand, I think the thing that would prevent other teams from playing the zone in the playoffs against us is not how we shoot, but how well we hit the boards. The achilles heel of zones is that it's much harder to find a player to box out and we have a whole team of wolves out there looking to crash the glass.
They work because Adams fills in the gap for zone defense when Alpi closes out. When Jabari is in he stays glued in the corner guarding his man only. He doesn't slide in to do paint defense.
It works because it clogs the paint and our bigs don't have to switch or go out on the perimeter. Same reason that teams have played zone for decades. It prevents the other team from taking advantage of man to man matchups.
We have seen teams play zone against us very effectively. The Nets are the most obvious example. The problem with a zone is that in order to play it against a really good offense, the zone rotations have to be really good. Most teams don"t put in the work required to get that good. Like you said, not much zone in the playoffs. Teams shoot and pass too well.
What’s the ORTG and DRTG for the double bigs? It seems like ORTG goes straight up, which isn’t expected when having 2 to 3 non-3-point shooters on the offensive end.
Adams also played double-big with JJJ at Memphis and their defensive rating was insane together. Then Adams got hurt. Adams is the one who makes it work because he has adapted to playing with Alpi on the floor just like he did with Serge Ibaka at OKC and JJJ at Memphis. He's a smart, high-energy player that figures things out. I'll add that on the offensive side of the floor, even though he has no skills to score, the mere threat of Adams on the offensive glass forces defenses to account for him, so it's not a 4 vs. 5 situation. He must be guarded at all times.
