Paging BimaThug: How much cap space can we have if we decline FVV, trade Cam/Reed?

Just thinking about some hypotheticals here and was curious to get a hard answer from the man himself. Assuming we declined Fred's option (and Jock's, Holiday's) and traded Cam and Reed to a team with cap space in exchange for draft picks, how much space could we actually create? My ballpark estimate, which could be wrong, is "about $39 million". So close to, but not quite, max money.

For clarification, the player I was specifically thinking about the Rockets going after was Myles Turner, who is an unrestricted free agent. I'd imagine he will get a big payday. The double-bigs lineup has worked so well that I started really thinking about what it would look like to have a true stretch 5 who plays high-end defense. Turner would also be a nice fit with Amen playing point guard. That would obviously make our PG position extremely thin though. Maybe a second trade for a PG?

Edit: @BimaThug for good measure :D

    Projected cap is 154.6M

    Rockets salaries for
    Sengun
    Green
    Brooks
    Smith
    Thompson
    Eason
    NateWill

    Is like 117M
    Add in pick 13 (4.2M)
    Add incomplete roster charge x 4 = 4.5M

It leaves like 28M in cap space.
Assuming everyone else is traded away for nil return (will cost picks), or NG salary waived, or rights renounced.
So nobody currently on the team could come back.
(My numbers might be wrong, but 28M won't be enough anyway)

I don't get why you would pursue Turner that way. Seems lunacy to me.

Thanks! I'm getting about the same numbers running the math on the players you listed. So it comes to about $38M before you get to the FRP and incomplete roster charges. Is Nate Williams on a guaranteed contract next season?

I think we can also trade the PHX pick (perhaps for a future FRP) if that's the route we want to go. I agree it seems like a lot to give up just to create cap space, and pretty unlikely; was just curious.

I’m wondering if the Rockets can go the other way and pick up Greds option then extend him on a more reasonable amount. This was a 3yr/90m extension can look like a 4yr/134.8m deal. Giving Fred an annual value of 33.7m which feels fair for both sides.

Turner is a fun name but he doesn’t really defend the rim anymore, poor defender.

Rockets would be wise to hang on to Reed.

The team now minus free agents (FVV, Holiday, Jeff Green, Adams, Tate) for next year will be $140M. Add a rookie and fillers and it gets closer to $160M. The Rockets probably will go over the cap and sign FVV but I don’t see the Rockets giving FVV the team option for $45M next year. They will likely want to stay under $190M and restructure his contract to somewhere in the $20-30M range.

Why go to all the hassle?

Use some of the assets you are flushing and trade for him

I'm so out of touch on what the sign and trade rules are right now. Can you still do that kind of sign & trade for an unrestricted free agent?

Myles Turner? Nah. Sign and trade, maybe

The other longhorn is the dude.

I guess Myles would be okay as a fallback plan.

How much cap space would they have if they just traded the entire team?

My preferred big is Naz Reid, but he will be a difficult get. If not KD, then John Collins would be a great get. 37.5 career 3 pt %, good rebounder, 27 years old. 27m next year. Phoenix 25 pick plus expirings. Re-up Fred at 3 years. 90m Team options 2nd and 3rd year. Amen, Jalen, Tari, Jabari, Sengun 1st unit. Bench FVV, Dillon, Collins, Reed, Adams or journeyman center. Tari and Collins are interchangeable for starting unit. Go "small" at times with Amen, Jalen, Tari, Collins, Jabari.

Fred, Amen and Reed will probably be a better group next yr, but that doesn’t change the fact that if Fred shoots like he did this yr and Reed doesn’t take a real leap in year 2, we’re in big trouble at the point guard position. I’d rather take the risk out of the equation and upgrade the position all together this offseason. But while I’d like to see Fred in more of a 6th man role, I think he’s a valuable player and this down shooting yr is probably more of an anomaly. I also think Reed will take a leap. I thought he was starting to turn the corner right before his injury. And of course Amen will continue to improve his handles and everything else. So sticking with that group is not a terrible back up plan, especially if we don’t overpay for Fred, and add shooting elsewhere in the rotation.

I do think that if we are gonna extend Tari Bari and keep Dillon, we probably need to trade Cam because he’s just not gonna see the court enough. I’m hoping a package of our 2025 Suns pick, Cam and a future pick gets us a really good player. Honestly that’s pretty much the value the Spurs gave up for Fox.

Reed is not a throw-in. People are giving up on him way way too early, especially given his pedigree as a ball handler and shooter…skill sets we desperately need on this roster.

    Yes.

Operating as an above-the-cap team is likely best for the Rockets.

Not really pushing for it, just kicking around hypotheticals to try and figure out what the possibilities are in the offseason. Happened to be watching the Pacers/Lakers game so was thinking about Turner and his possible fit a bit and thinking about different ways we could get him here.

Call me crazy, but any roster plan needs to end with a plus contributor PG on the roster, something I've been saying since the Rafer days.

Getting rid of Fred comes with peril.
