Trust they can afford Beltran, Pavano and Pedro if they choose to. They will go after everybody and unfortunately there is no salary cap to keep them in check.

All George knows how to do is reload :(

absolutely right. i was just giddy about the yanks losing and what that might mean for us, and wanted to get the thought out before i lost it.

pedro would be a mistake. he is well on the downside of his career. pedro cannot handle the pressure of Yankee stadium on eihter side.

Beltran? He'll go after him. My point was that I just don't think he'll break the bank and bid us out of oblivion. He needs pitching in the worst way, and Pedro alone is not enough.

I'd be extremely surprised in Steinbrener passes on the most complete player in the game, and is still only 27. Yes, they need pitching, but he's going to throw alot of cash at Beltran too.

Your post makes total sense, but unfortunately I don't think anything will stop George from at least driving the price up on Beltran. I'm sure he'll get at least one of his pitchers, and then after that will go after someone like Beltran. I don't know any other top name free agent's that aren't pitchers, but I do know Beltran is the top one and if history stands true, George will go after the top one.

again, my point is that i don't htink steinbrenner will go nutso in bidding. the price will be high, but not a-rod dollars. we'll have a legit shot.

Pedro, Mussina, Vasquez, Pavano, Leiber, Brown, El Duque . . . I still don't see a No. 1, top shelf stopper in the rotation. Lotsa Number 2 and 3's.

what he really needs to do is to get Randy Johnson. He still has 2 years in him.

The Yankees pitching will one day consist of at least 2 of the 3.

    Barry Zito
    Tim Hudson
    Mark Mulder

Zito will be the first, as i believe he is first eligible for free agency.

This won't happen. Even if Steinbrenner passed completely on Beltran, his offer from the Astros will be the most the team can offer while still being successfuly (either economically, on the field, or both).

Does He Stay or Does He Go?

    Simple question.

My personal bet is that Beltran leaves. I just don't think the Astros will offer him the every-year opportunity to get to the Series and the kind of money he will get in NYC or Chicago.

The Astros have always competed for the division with exception to the 2000 season. They have always been in playoff contention, more so than the Cubs by far. The money will be relatively the same whether he goes to New York, Chicago or Houston. If the astros can guarantee they'll lock up both Berkman and Oswalt i think Beltran will be inclined to stay. In the end it comes down to where he and his family want to live; not the money.

Totally agree. We've been competitive through the years. The only problem I see with it is Scott Bora$.

I have not voted yet. Not sure what he will do.

But I do know this. The Astros should do everything in their power to sign him.

There is just no reason to take the Astros seriously next year if Beltran wants to stay and the Astros dont show him the money.

With Beltran, the Astros will continue to be on the upswing. This NLCS loss to the Cards hurts, but teams have to go through bumps in the road in order to achieve their ultimate goal. This Astros team can only become stronger next year after experiencing this (IF they keep beltran).

Look at the Cards. They lost in the 2000 NLCS, the 2001 NLDS, the 2002 NLCS. Those series losses made them stronger as a team and they finally got over the hump.

These Astros can also get over the hump, but they need to keep the players that were the reason the Astros got to the NLCS. Not keeping Beltran would be a major blow to this Astros franchise.

Not keeping Beltran shows that the Astros organization is not committed to winning. Not keeping Beltran (if Beltran wants to stay) would be an insult to Astros fans everywhere.

Beltran will stay. This was his first taste of the playoffs. Drayton will do anything and everything to keep him. Beltran likes it in Houston and likes playing at MMP.

As much as my heart says he will stay ... My head tells me he is gone

Not only do the Yankees offer the most money, they also offer him the best chance at being in the post-season year-in and year-out.

The icing on the cake for the Yanks is Beltran's relationship with Bernie Williams.

As much as I hate to say it, even if we offer Carlos the same amount of money as the Yanks, I have to believe that they would still be the favorite. As long as he goes to the AL, I won't be too upset.

Thanks for the great year Carlos ... The Stros couldn't have done it without you.

Hopefully Houston was a great enough city to allow you to at least give us strong consideration this offseason.
