I've had an old HP officejet pro 8610 for probably a decade. It's been fine. I rarely used it most of the time and because of that was fine paying for OEM ink. Since having kids in the last few years my wife prints out activity sheets to keep them busy at home. So, the last few years we've been buying 3rd party remanufactured ink cartridges.

Recently, I think there's been a firmware update that made 3rd party ink unusable. Just checking online it looks like this is becoming the norm now for home printers.

How are you guys avoiding paying $140 for OEM ink?

I have a similar model HP and almost pulled the trigger on an Epson Ecotank not long ago, but decided to hold off until next Black Friday (or if I stumble across a deal sooner).

The Epson ink bottles are cheaper and yield more pages than HP ink.

I have a Brother laser printer black only and I've been using the same aftermarket toner cartridge since 2022.

    1) They'll give you an inkjet printer damn-near free so they can screw you on the refill prices.
    2) Ask yourself if you really need color (if so, there are color laser printers out there). If you do, then, of course refills will probably cost more. I haven't had a need for color in my printouts, so I don't buy color printers. But then I also don't print a ton. You sound like you may need color and print often.
    3) You may want to just get a laser printer. If so, I've heard the newer HP's aren't that good, but Brothers are. Read reviews and find out how long the refills last and cost. I haven't looked into printer tech in over 10 years, so I don't know what's out there or the longevity of printers or their parts.

Lol. You and me both. I bought my Canon monochrome laser back in 2014 and am probably on my 2nd or 3rd toner cartridge. I have thought about buying a color printer eventually but can't come up with a reason for any legit use case or need. I thought about getting one for astrophotography in the next year or two if I decide to get into it, but then I've read laser printers stink for photographs and such compared to inkjet, but haven't researched it much, so I could be off.

Print your stuff at work. I get my toilet paper, hand soap, pens, notebooks, plasticware, and ice there, too.

I've had the same brother color laser printer for almost 20 years. I only use aftermarket cartridges. Will never go back to ink.

I would just find an old printer on Ebay that uses refillable ink. Will be cheaper in the long run. You can dump your old printer in the bin behind the Fiesta on Wirt Rd. There are no cameras in that area, so you're gold.

About a year ago my HP printer decided the spare cartridge I had in the drawer was too old and threw an error code indicating it was refusing it. I've always kept a spare because I swear they eat ink in the maintenance cycles. So went and bought what to me looked like an identical replacement to the cartridge I had, just newer manufacturer's date and it worked fine. I couldn't justify straight scrapping it there but I won't be buying another HP.

Good call, but it's really not the same without the Geto Boys:

Oddly enough, if you print photographs on your printer, an inkjet may be better. Or so I've been told.

Last time my wife sent me to the store to buy more ink, I came home with a new printer. It was cheaper.

Now, I try to avoid printing at all cost. I work from home, so she prints everything at work.

On that subject, my wife has a 36” x 54’ plotter. What should I print?

Sorry to be righteous but normalizing cold blooded murder in the street of a CEO is bad.

    Do better.
