Bigs take longer to build up conditioning than smaller guys ... Source , my ass , but I also believe it . Sengun has all the makings of a dominant player , but he needs to continue to get into NBA shape / maybe needs backups or support from the surrounding roster to maximize him. Same with any player really . The question is always who is the player or players you build around and maximize . Green has played a lot of minutes and has a trend of getting stronger as the season goes on. We will see how everyone looks in the playoffs . Sengun went down last season in March right ? IMO he needs more rest to be fully effective in the playoffs and right now is not a guy you rely on for 36+ minutes . I still thinks he's a great bet to build around , but he's got question marks just like green or amen . Green is the cleanest fit because of position. But if you want to build around any player they need to be top 5 at their position in the NBA. None of our guys are there yet . Is it too hard to play inside out nowadays ?
Right now, Sengün would do wonders as the 2nd or 3rd best player on a stacked team with the superstar already locked in and not the young captain of a 'Lord of the Flies' group. He is great here as well but it is not the perfect fit. Sengün like any young prospect needs structure and hierarchy. It takes at least 3-4 years to perfect the Alperen team which might or might not even be championship caliber, we do not know yet.
If Sengun shoots 2, or 3% better from the floor and 5% better from the FT line and we are talking about a secure All Star talent. All of this is doable.
This reason right here is why Jabari is so important, I don't get why he barely played at all. We need his shooting and weak side defense/rebounding. Just subbing him in for Fred last night probably wins us the game I am with you I'm starting to think Sengun is better as a 4.
I don't have much hope for Sengun's free throw shooting after he answered that his struggles are all mental. His mechanics are poor too. He doesn't use his legs and has sort of a hitch. I thought Ben Sullivan was supposed to be a shooting coach?
To blame last night on Alpi shows how braindead some of the people here are. He did not have his best shooting game but did manage a triple double, 3 stocks, and had ZERO turnovers with 10 assist. I was at the game. Last night Murray was having his way with the Rockets. He couldn't miss until the 4th quarter when we mounted a failed comeback. Both Alpi and Jalen had some "choking" moments near the end. FVV had an absolutely terrible game yet Ime still played him 42 minutes .
Repetition and consistency are key to being a solid FT shooter and Alpi's form has deteriorated this year and has been anything, but those aforementioned characteristics. Same for his mid-range game, he's thinking too much. I didn't love his Dirk shot last year, but at least he was consistent with it and the form seemed to repeat. This year his mid-range game is scattered and I'm afraid that's impacted his FT shooting as well. If he can develop a consistent mid-range shot he'll be deadly and that should also help him stretch his range as well.
While bigs need to work on conditioning, they are generally already big. The slowest thing to develop is perimeter playmaking skills, IMO. Several guys like Cade, Garland, Booker took a while to develop and there is no guarantee they will develop. On playing inside out, zone defense is now legal, While teams still play man-to-man mostly, they sure use a lot of zone principles to deny bigs the ball. It is just hard to get the ball to bigs cleanly inside with them in a position to do much.
He's playing poorly right now. Yes he puts up decent numbers but if you watched the game you know he's definitely regressed. Not sure as our "best player" excuses are made for him. It's not Ime's fault or his teammates. He's going to get EXPOSED in the playoffs
I think Alpi’s gonna get super amped and play hard as hell in the playoffs. He seems to love to play to the crowd and feeds off high energy situations. And plus, I don’t see any indication that he’s the type of player who will let the pressure get to him in the postseason. Besides the free-throw shooting, maybe.
Sengun just doesn't have it as a franchise player. He's a good player but his shooting limitations will hold him back. Guys like Jalen Green and Amen Thompson all improved their shooting, Sengun is arguably worse. Seems to lack muscle memory in that regard; quite often you see open shots miss badly. If he's this bad 4 years in (assuming he has a work ethic and has been practicing hard on shooting)t, it's unlikely he will significantly improve.
He's also playing defense at the highest level he's played thus far. Defense really takes it out of your legs. Shooting relies a lot on leg strength. I think this is a conditioning issue - not a muscle memory issue. And we've seen Sengun's body change pretty radically. Not just since he arrived here, but even before. He got here at age 19. If you go view film of him at 16 and 17 he was a straight up fat kid. I'm not concerned about this in the slightest. I think next season we're going to see a Sengun who has put it all together and is now capable of playing both offense and defense for the minutes we need him.
I very much hope your are right. Otherwise the shooting touch loss issue is unexplainable. not just the shooting touch, he gave up on some moves that gave me joy on a regular basis, the spin moves and the fakes. Probably they are much harder to do now, since he is double/triple teamed all the time. I wonder what his percentage is on these shots. I feel like it is very low. They seem to fall short typically.
I meannnnnnn NO haha. English argues that If he's regressed - then he's playing at his new level. And if he's playing poorly - then it's temporary and he hasn't regressed. You can't have your Alpi sucks now but also he was never good cake and eat it too lol Well, it's the internet, I guess you can. You'd be wrong though. Nice to see the Anti-cult is excited about the team's recent 10-1 stretch - to solidify a top 4 seed - on a team with all its best players 23 and under.
