In what league is Cam Whitmore a "potential franchise cornerstone"? I mean, he definitely has potential, and could be an excellent "6th man wing", but he has some work to do to get there. Hope he has a great offseason, mentally and physically.
Everyone knows what Cam's upside is. He has that rare "could be a 1A and great defender" thing few players possess. From a pure "get me a bucket" standpoint, he mightve been the best in his draft class. This isnt Jordan Poole, Cam Thomas or Jaden Hardy. He is insanely talented and has a nose for scoring. Issue is that isnt enough at this level.
The Wizards podcast want Cam Whitmore. Maybe the Rockets can get Bilal Coulibaly. Bilal is a true defensive player with a all-around offensive game.
Mentally, he has to want to be a defender. Can anyone say he's there yet? Mentally he has to know how to play within the structure of an offense. Can anyone say he's there yet? This is a big offseason for him.
I haven't seen the commitment to defense, he could be another multi-switch freak like Tari and Amen if he wanted it enough.
He played about 2 months of neutral defense, had 2-3 bad games, and then bench. I don't think he will ever be a Tari or Amen. By neutral defense, the Rockets defense was basically the Rockets defense with or without him. He wasn't a guy that was driving great defense, but his level of defensive f#$6ery wasn't a negative either. He wasn't being exploited like he was last season nearly as often. Offense still is baby steps.
You think by just wanting it he'll be like Amen Thompson - someone being talked about on ESPN today as a future DPOY candidate?
Nope. I think that by working at it he can be somewhat close to as good as those guys I mentioned. But he's got to want to put the work in, same with his offensive game/mindset. Pretty sure I've said this before, like 8 posts ago.
Who’s “we”? I’m sure you don’t know. And for that matter I don’t either. But how do you know the team that gets to see and play with him everyday doesn’t? Or the other 19 GMs that passed him up in the draft? Why do they have to play him at the expense of team success just so YOU get to be in the know?
Cam would be a fantastic fit next to Sarr and Bub plus new guy. Wizards are high on Bilal though. They'd probably want Cam + Suns pick.
