Not at all. You just have to remember how Udoka kept giving Reed minutes even though he looked like he didn't belong playing NBA basketball. In retrospect, I think an argument can be made Reed should have been sent to G-League sooner because that was clearly helpful in getting him on a better track.
You make the qualification as Reed Sheppard was playing like a total bust and was playing far below your average rookie. 11.9 mins for a guy shooting 33% FG is a long leash. You think almost 1 quarter a game isnt a long leash for a guy shooting that badly? lol If Sheppard was a 2 way contract he wouldnt even see the court with that kind of play. So yeah his leash was long due to him being the 3rd pick in the draft. People who want even more minutes are just Reed only fans and dont care if the Rockets lose games as long as Reed gets his minutes.
Yup, his development is far more important than a few meaningless wins. Same goes for any young player on a non contender.
Next year, if you're talking about him being a meaningful player There's a long time from here and there for him to work on his body (game too of course)
He wasn't shooting 33% in the one month he got regular minutes. November is the only month that he consistently played and he had 36/36 shooting splits. That's not far below what an average rookie guard does in their first month. But those aren't the type of stats that win you games and the Rockets are trying to win. Rookies in general, even in the good ones, don't play winning basketball. There are very few 3-4 year players drafted in the lottery anymore that can come in and contribute to winning right away. They aren't strong enough, they don't know where to be on the court, they don't know the right rotation to make, they don't know the best pass to make etc.
Most rookies don't look like they belong on a basketball court during their first month. But when they are on losing teams they have long leashes because development is more important than winning. The Rockets are trying to win.
Give me a break! Some of you guys making excuses for Reed are so desperate. All you can resort to is rhetorical nonsense. Try that stuff out on people that don’t watch Rockets games because it won’t work on those of us that do. We saw how pathetic he actually was, and his play can’t be generalized on how “most rookies” are.
3% FG doesnt mean much shooting 30% range FG is just bad regardless whether thats 33 or 36%. Playing in November and you compare him to a rookie playing in the first month? If we compare him to Jalen, Jalen shot 42% as a rookie. Jabari was 40.8%. Yes its normal to play bad as a rookie but again Reed was so much worse than everybody else getting 11.9 mpg was a long leash. In general, there is no problem with the statements being made here. However in the context of Reed playing way worse than every rookie we've had the last 3 yrs then it makes the statements false cuz Ime has coddled Reed more than guys we have cut like Tyty, Josh Christopher and Daishen Nix. All those had better rookie seasons than Reed but they got cut while Reed gets almost a quarter each game of PT on average. Whats even more ridiculous is Reed got a season ending injury. So you guys are blaming his "short leash" when Ime cant even play him if he wanted to cuz the dude is injured. Bruh.
I don't know what your point is here. Do you think most rookies don't look bad in their first month? We've seen plenty of rookies with long leashes on this team during the rebuild. Reed isn't one of them. If this was 2 years ago Reed would be getting 30+ minutes a game.
Jalen was trash the first half of his rookie season. He had 37/28 shooting splits going into February of his rookie season while getting 30 minutes a game. Bari was trash too shooting 38/30 through February of his rookie year but was still starting and getting 30 minutes a game. The difference is those 2 had really long leashes and got to keep playing. Neither one of those guys would be getting regular minutes on the team this year. Maybe Reed never improves but his leash is so short that we can't tell much right now.
37 and 38 is not 33 or 36 so what is your point? Worst of Jabari and Jalen still better than Reeds best so what is your point? If you look at Reed's worst he was in the 20s at some point lol. Compare worst to worst, best to best and average to average. What you are doing is comparing Reeds best to Jalen and Jabari's worst and even then Reed is still worse than those two. If Reed got 11.9 mpg playing way worse than Jalen and Jabari I am sure those two would get just as much or even more minutes.
I'm saying Reed looked catastrophically bad his first two months. You use "bad" as a general, one-size fits all description. That word, by itself, isn't strong enough for how terrible Reed was and how terribly uncomfortable he looked on the floor. Even "dear in the headlights" is a kind description. What was particularly troublesome is there were no signs that improvement was around the corner, which is why they finally relented and sent him to G-League after giving him too long a leash.
I'm comparing them at similar points in their careers. We have no idea what Reed would do as a rookie if he had the long leashes Bari and Jalen had. What we do know is that all 3 players struggled to start their careers.
So by similar you mean looking at Reed's best month of November and then looking for Jalen and Jabari's worst month of their rookie year? Jalen struggled at 42% and Jabari struggled at 40% but somehow thats the same as Reed struggling at 33%? The contortions you make to distort the data is honestly funny at this point. What is the evidence "long leashes" will help Reed improve his play drastically? We have seen rookies play badly even with so called long leashes like Johnny Flynn and Johnny Davis. According to you when Reed got more he just increased his FG% to 36% which is STILL bad.
We disagree on what happened then. I think the Rockets sent him to the g league because it was clear he wasn't a winning player at this point in his career and they are trying to win. I don't think Reed gets sent to the g league on the tanking Rockets 2 or 3 years ago. Same for Cam Whittmore. I think the Rockets aren't going to sacrifice wins for development right now.
Nope i don't mean that. I never compared Reed's best month to Jalen and Bari's worst months. You did that in your mind only.
You said Reed has his best month in november when he had 36%. You said Jalen had 37 going into February. You said Jabari had 38 into February as well. Jalen has an average of 42. Jabari has an average of 40. You cherry picked data that was lower than their average but for Reed you only mentioned his best month of novermber which was higher than his average of 33%. How is that in my mind only?
Because Jalen and Bari weren't even being discussed when I brought up Reed's best month and I didn't bring up his best month again after you mentioned those 2.
