How many of you got it?

We didn't get touched with it yesterday because we got the early word but I caught the copycat "Fwd: Joke" one today hitting our company's servers ... fortunately only 2 people had opened it before we got it wiped clean.

I'd hate to be this guy who created it... apparently lives in Manila ... you know Bill Gates, Michael Dell and Larry Ellison are flying out there to beat the hell out of this guy...

... or offer him a job.

Our company decided it would be best for the home office in Stamford to have the Internet connection, and the Satellites to just have T1's going into Stamford. When they learned about the virus yesterday, they decided to leave the E-mail server up but just disconnect the company from the Internet. Yesterday was the longest day of my life.

The virus was pretty big/bad in Germany, too. Many big companies from all business fields had immense probelms, even some TV stations.

Fortunately, I use a Macintosh. Never had any problems with this kind of stuff.

But, frankly, you must be pretty dumb to download an attachment if you don´t know who sent you the email...

We shut down our operations at my company. Everybody just sat around shooting the breeze or went home. I got home and had about 100 emails (due to mailing lists, ugh), but not one contained the worm. Luckily I *think* my firewall would've caught it trying to communicate back to "home base", but no way would it have stopped me from being "infected".

Some of us sat around at work looking at the worm script. Somebody took some time and patience into creating that thing. The stuff it did would be lethal to many web developers, and of course everybody would suffer from the loss of privacy/passwords.

    Freaky times we're living in.

My school's network got hit preatty hard because it got in to the network around 6:00am but the IS didn't send us an email until like 8:20 which is about when people were logging on to check. so some people opened the virus email before the warning email. It our network really bad because everybody's adress book is all 600 some odd students. The mail servers at my school shutdown around 10:20am yesterday and weren't back online until like 9:00 this morning. But I think we have gotten it wiped out of our system. I hope.

    Jovi,

I kinda resent that statement ... if you read up on the virus, you would see that it came from a friend. Now I personally would not have ran a .VBX file, but at least 85% of the people i've ever ran across would have ran it since they had no idea of the file type. We all can't be as wise as you.

Frankly if someone has the time to download just their mail headers, parse them; then download only the ones they want...they have too much time on their hands.

Now opening the attachment...that's another story. One of the knuckleheads in marketing sent it to me, but I deleted it immediately. No harm done to me, but we lost a development box the brainchild was mapped to. Thank God for backups.....

Then you don't understand how the worm works. Your mother could have sent you that attachment; it doesn't have to be someone "unknown".

I think what Jovi means is that he's never had to worry about mass-virus problems because he uses a Mac.

I feel the same way because I use a Mac, and I've never had to worry about this stuff.

BTW, I also knew that the message came from a friends email address.

I forgot that the email would come in from a familiar email address, but -- using a Mac and not knowing ".vbx-files" -- no one that surfs the internet for five years should open it.

Pretty clever virus, though. Did I mention it was written from a German exchange student [IMG]
