    What's the deal with Cameron?

We signed him, but 790 said he fell due to some issue about his not playing.

What do you mean? He's already playing in the Astros system.

They questioned the ability to sign him and that he might fall (this was during the first few picks of the draft). It wasn't anything about his talent, just some kinda uncertainty regarding his decision to play baseball.

Maybe he had pro potential in a different sport.

Anyways, it's moot now that he signed. Supposedly, we got a steal @37.

Well, he did play varsity basketball as a freshman before he switched to baseball full-time.

After his HS Junior year, Cameron was being considered as a legitimate potential #1 pick. But after his senior year, there was talk he did not improve enough to lock in the #1 pick. So, his stock dropped to a top 7 pick. But from the sound of things, Cameron told everyone what $$figure would get him signed.

It could be that Cameron played it safe so as not to get hurt, and his stock fell. But the talent for a #1 pick was there, he just didn't get over the hump to actually get the #1 spot. So, he knew that 4 million dollars would be fair compensation.

    Ah ha !!! Thanks

Anything can happen, but getting the #1, #5, and "#1" should boast well for the Stros' future.

    Don't you mean #2, #5 and "#1"?

We have a signing! Matt Bower, who was drafted in the 23rd round out of Washington State, is now with the Greeneville Astros.

Did we ever hear if Sandoval was assigned to the GCL? It'd be nice to see him make a start this year, but they probably assigned him to the back fields in Kissimmee.

With Tucker gone, there are now no more players from this draft in the system and we can write the book. This was an insanely productive draft, although built around just 2 players. We all know how good Bregman and Tucker were, but 10 other players from this draft reached the majors:

Daz Cameron (1c): traded for Verlander; topped out as a AAAA OF, currently in camp with the Orioles
Tom Eshelman (2): traded for Ken Giles; AAAA SP out of baseball
Trent Thornton (5): still in middle relief with the Mariners
Garrett Stubbs (8): traded for Logan Cerny; solid backup C for the Phillies
Patrick Sandoval (11): traded for Maldonado and turned into a solid MoR arm and is rehabbing with the Red Sox after TJS
Myles Straw (13): broke out as an everyday CF, traded to the Indians for Yainer Diaz, signed an extension, and fell apart, currently in camp with the Blue Jays
Cole Sands (22): didn’t sign with Astros; currently with the Twins
Ralph Garza (26): AAAA RP, out of baseball
Kody Clemens (35): didn’t sign with Astros; currently bench player with the Phillies
Luken Baker (37): didn’t sign with Astros, currently with St. Louis

Houston got 2 borderline HoF, another prospect who was apart of a trade to bring in a real HoF, another prospect who brought back a star player via trade, and another prospect who ended up being a solid SP for another team, along with a half dozen solid AAAA depth guys. Of course having all that draft capital matters, but there’s no question this draft (along with 2012) was one of the cornerstones of Houston’s run.
